We had the good fortune of connecting with Whitney Hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Whitney, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?

Focus has been the single most important factor behind our success. We created SnapADU to focus exclusively on designing, permitting and building accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in San Diego so that we can deliver a consistently positive experience for our clients. By specializing in detached granny flats, instead of taking on other residential construction work like renovations or custom homes, we have seen several different benefits:

1) Build expertise. Since we only build ADUs, we have quickly gained experience with the nuances of the local and state zoning and planning regulations, as well as the sitework and vertical construction watch-outs.
2) Reduce cost. By offering ADU floor plans that conform to our design standards, we are able to more accurately and quickly estimate the price for construction. We’ve also been able to improve our cost and availability by standardizing room features and finishes where possible.
3) Improve predictability. Our focus on a single type of product has allowed us to set up workflows that have predictable stages and timelines, which we manage with extensive project management software and a talented core team.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
SnapADU is an ADU builder focused exclusively on designing, permitting & building accessory dwelling units (also known as granny flats, guest houses, or casitas) in Greater San Diego. We have over 40 ADU projects currently in design, permitting & building phases throughout Greater San Diego.

We are excited to offer a true design+build process, with our design and permitting handled in-house to ensure we can meet the timelines and budgets we present to our clients. We offer cost effective build-ready ADU plans, which can be customized if needed to suit property constraints (e.g. moving windows, doors, or expanding a room). We love that we are shaping the way the ADU market is evolving in San Diego.

We pride ourselves on promoting transparency, pioneering innovation, prioritizing people, and providing flexible lifestyles. We share information to help property owners make a decision about building a granny flat. Our pricing is readily available alongside each of our standard ADU plans and our blog answers FAQs related to building an ADU. We are early and avid adopters of technology, which gives our clients a streamlined experience and keeps our projects on track. We are proud to help homeowners create flexibility with innovative housing that adapts to needs of evolving lifestyles with intergenerational living.

Along the way to becoming experts in the ADU space, we’ve spent countless hours learning from our mistakes. COVID-induced material price & availability fluctuations have been consistently unpredictable. And we’ve had to set up the infrastructure for a growing company while also continuing our day-to-day operations. Every day brings new challenges, but we are excited to tackle them and offer better and better outcomes for our clients.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If friends were visiting on a trip to San Diego, I’d send them to some of our favorite spots:

Natural beauty:
• Torrey Pines for some easy yet breathtaking hikes overlooking the ocean. If the main parking lot is full, try the Gliderport and start your hike from there!
• Mission Bay for a day at the beach with lake vibes, or head to Dixon Lake in Escondido for beautiful views and a family picnic.
• Cuyamaca Rancho State Park for fun spots like Green Valley Waterfall (plunge in from 15’ up!) or Stonewall Peak for a rocky and exciting ascent.

Fun eats & activities:
• Stone Brewing in Escondido or Liberty Station, where the kids will enjoy the ambiance as much as the adults do.
• Gaslamp to check out the “new normal” that is the pedestrian-centric core of restaurants and bars.
• Kearny Mesa for some excellent sushi and karaoke options.
• Julian to check out the downtown for some pie and cider, plus tour the mine. Or head to Idyllwild for more low-key vibes, and great snow play in winter months.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Mike Moore and I have built SnapADU together against the backdrop of the pandemic. We both took a risk in focusing on accessory dwelling units, especially as Mike was turning down other construction business to do so. He had operated successfully as a general contractor for nearly a decade, but was willing and able to radically evolve his existing contracting business with technology as we formed SnapADU.

As we’ve built our company, we have also been fortunate to attract and retain an incredibly talented team. In a startup business, roles and responsibilities rapidly evolve. Each of our team members has been willing to work through ambiguity and to take responsibility for making us better by improving their part of the business. They have also put their trust in us to successfully run and grow SnapADU into a company they want to continue working for.
