We had the good fortune of connecting with Kathryn Krug and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kathryn, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Counseling SDC is a private therapy practice restoring the communities of California, one relationship at a time. I developed this company with my business partner Michelle Park to meet the relational needs of our fellow humans. Healthy relationships and restored relationships are humanities greatest protection and strength. The ability for people to find their community and belong, is the ultimate rebellion against the culture we live within now. I had a great teacher show me that we are all fish swimming in an ocean of aggressive division. Love and relationships are the counter to this. At Counseling SDC, we work with individuals, families and couples through their relational struggles. We specialize in relational dynamics; including trauma and estrangement. Our mission is to break intergenerational cycles, soothe systemic wounds and empower people to live together. There is a future where we, the people, stand together and walk forward into a healed Earth.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own a private practice here in San Diego. We are a group practice that accepts major insurance and has multiple clinicians. Counseling SDC started as an idea though. An idea that came from the mother of all invention; necessity. I decided to open a private practice amidst some severe overwhelm. Being a county and state mental health worker for years had turned my motivation and desire for the field into dust. My clients were not getting better and I was getting worse. That’s when I decided to start a group practice and make my own rules.

That’s what sets Counseling SDC apart. We provide whole person centered care with tailored treatment. We focus on relational restoration and include spiritual, somatic and sound to our therapy services. We provide all therapy modalities in house. That means our clients needs can be met in real time. In 1 session we can meet trauma needs with parts work and EMDR, relax the nervous system with sounds bowls and breathe work and send the client home with specialized tools. We have specialized training in conflict management, parenting planning and custody agreements. We even offer reunification services. No relationship type or relational stage is outside our scope.

The journey from idea to functioning revenue yielding business was a long road. I have made many mistakes. I have recovered from them all. Perhaps the scariest mistakes I have made are related to compliance and paperwork. Everything is a process. Taking my time and continuing to work full-time while I developed the business and branding concepts helped. If I could go back to myself at the beginning of this journey. I would tell myself to keep my day job. The extra security meant I could take risks and learn new innovative treatment modalities. It also helped for those first few months when the business was open but we made no money.

I’ve learned to trust myself. I have learned to slow down and take things one step at a time. Before opening my practice prided myself in completing tasks. Now, I have grown to appreciate small wins like getting one step closer.

I want people to know that Counseling SDC is different. We believe community will save humanity. We meet the needs of all relationships that walk through our doors. Designing relationships is our greatest gift.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Anyone visiting San Diego must try the food! A food tour is a must. Just name the type of food. We should be able to find it. From there, I like to show people our monuments. Our beaches and our parks, museums and well known landmarks.

Then, I would drive them to my childhood neighborhood in Chula Vista. I would educate them about the real people of San Diego. The hard working and community loving brothers and sisters that live here. I would take them to the mountains and show them the desert. I would urge them to clean the beach. I would ask this visitor to see San Diego as a place with deep history and roots in the story of our United States. Lastly, I would insist this person attend a cultural event with me. San Diego is a wonderful cultural hub. I love to help San Diego stand out. We are so different from other cities.

Nothing is more exciting than to see someone’s perspective widen.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate this article to all the mixed race kids out there who are not enough to belong. I see you. You are beautiful. You are enough and you do belong. Keep going. It gets better.
