We had the good fortune of connecting with Trudy Moylan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Trudy, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk taking to me is the biggest part of being in business for yourself. Personally I have always been able to take risks with out hesitation. I am a person of intuition. I always listen to my own intuition & gut. I get gut feelings on things & just go for it. I don’t really over think or sometimes even think things out. I just know what feels right & do that. I am usually right. When I am wrong I just adjust. I seem to never succeed when I overthink things & ignore my gut feelings. I have an awareness of self that tells me just listen to your gut & go for it. I think when you know yourself & trust yourself you should just try things to see if they work. Usually the reward is worth the risk. Overthinking can lead to stagnancy. Taking risks can lead to breakthroughs & paths you may have never imagined for yourself.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I decided in 5th grade that I wanted to be an artist. My art teacher thought I was not that good but I thought I was good & I had so much creativity inside me. So I kept practicing, working & learning to prove her that I was good enough. Isn’t life funny!? She never cared or saw it! hahaha But I was inspired & I knew this was my path. I left private school for a public Arts high school & continued on to get a BFA in Photography. What I realized about myself is that I am not the best technical artist in any media. What I have is endless creativity & the desire to create. That was my biggest lesson, To be my OWN artist. Focus on what I am good at, not what I can’t do. I admire the most talented illustrators, painters, graphic designers, I aspired to be that too… but I am not the best at those things. I do them all for myself but not for money or to show to others. I also have my own style. I don’t have the most popular or trendiest style but I have my own style. This is what keeps me engaged & happy. To create what I love & to find others who love that too. Being uniquely you is always your best superpower. My brand is for everyone but especially for those who have a romantic, bohemian, dreamer, feminine, classic eye. I want people to come back to the tradition of family, legacy & what a portrait means to elevate the value of you. To create images that are passed down from generations to generations that evoke stories of who the people are & what we love about them.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well this past year has been a COVID year & I have stayed at home. But I love San Diego for so many reasons. For me the outdoors is my most favorite thing. I am not really a fan of eating out or visiting shops. I know that is horrible to say, but true. I love to go to parks, historic parts of downtown, Coronado, walking on the beaches, Sunset cliffs & of course Balboa Park.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many shoutouts that I could mention here. I believe that life is a series of meaningful coincidences that all connect to create your own unique story. I started to really realize this when I was in my early 20’s. I had a brief romance with someone long distance. When I went to visit him in NYC he had an entire wall of shelves filled with books. I looked at the shelf & said what is that book? That book was The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. At the time I had just quit my full time job to focus on my accessories business that is called Zoe & Sage. Having this experience was one of many that helped me through the beginning of believing in myself as a business woman. It is important that you know despite the hardships you are on the right path. No journey worth the travels is all easy. Also a shout out to other women business owners who put collaboration over competition. Who build each other up. Like Carolina Hernandez of Veteran Couture. It is always an honor & pleasure to connect & work with other inspiring artists. Community support is important to our lives & success as humans. Foster these relationships.
