We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonathan Araujo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jonathan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I never set out with the intention of starting my own business. I had been working in sales leadership for about a decade and felt extremely burnt out. With the unexpected nudge from some personal unfortunate circumstances I left my job and set out to spend six months or so chasing happiness and doing what I love, creating. I set out with my camera and began capturing photos and video content of the beauty southern California has to offer. Once I began sharing what I was creating with others, the business part began to take shape on its own. However, when I found myself being able to generate some income, have fun, and put smiles on peoples faces I knew it was something I needed to start thinking about more seriously.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been creating videos nearly my entire life and began the professional adventure independently around 2012. Photography, which has become my more popular medium, I began in October 2019. I’d like to think what sets me apart from other local photographers is my love for and use of vibrant colors in my photos. Thought I normally shoot California Sunsets, even in my portraits I seek to bring as much scroll stopping color as I can to my social media feeds. I am very proud of the great community I have been able to build on social media just by sharing my thoughts accompanied by beautiful shots of my local beaches in Oceanside. In less than a year I have been able to not only teach myself photography and professional editing techniques, but I find myself now managing my own online store to sell my photos. Having never attempted to make an online shop or run my own business, the learning curve was very steep. Countless hours of research along with trial and error really put my patience to the test. The excitement from my community on social media really helped me push through the difficulties and keep me on track to add new and exciting things to my shop and my business. Perhaps the most important thing I have learned along the way is that you absolutely CAN learn new things no matter how difficult they seem at first. If you are dedicated to yourself and can continue to push yourself forward you will end up somewhere you didn’t expect to where you started and you will love it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Having shown many friends around the area in the past, there are a few staples that are my go-to for a fun time. First and foremost are the beaches. I would take them to all of my favorite spots in Oceanside. From the harbor, to the pier, down the strand, to Cassidy St and even into Carlsbad. We would get burritos at Alfredos Mexican Food and Senior Grubbys, or have BBQ at That Boy Good or Miss Kims. We would stop by the countless breweries in the area like Stone Brewing and Black Plague. The most important thing I would want them to be able to take in, is the pace and energy in the lifestyle here. From the streets to the beach you can feel it in the air and its as close to magic as you can get. (Having hardly been outside in a year now, this was a very difficult question to answer and think about)

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a special thank you to the kind strangers that took the time out of their day to share their admiration for my work. Without that type of encouragement, I likely would not have had the confidence to continue down my current path.
