We had the good fortune of connecting with Francesco Amendola and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Francesco, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The idea behind Sweetaly was actually pretty simple. I grew up in Italy, where gelato is just part of everyday life. When I moved to the United States, I noticed that whenever people talked about visiting Italy, one of the first things they mentioned was the gelato. It always seemed to be one of the memories they brought home with them. That made me think, why not bring a little piece of Italy here instead? We didn’t just want to sell dessert. We wanted people to experience real Italian gelato the way it’s made back home and share a tradition that’s been part of my life since I was a kid.
Seeing someone try authentic Italian gelato for the first time and watching it become one of their favorite places to visit is still one of the best parts of what we do. Now we’re excited to share that same experience with the Santa Barbara community too.

What should our readers know about your business?
What sets Sweetaly apart is our commitment to quality. From the ingredients we use to the way we make our gelato, we’ve always believed that if you focus on quality first, everything else follows. What excites me most is seeing people smile when they try our product. It never gets old. Knowing that something we’ve created can brighten someone’s day is one of the most rewarding parts of this business. We’re also excited to open our first California location in Santa Barbara, marking an important new chapter for Sweetaly.
Getting to where we are today was definitely not easy. Building a business is hard, and there are always new challenges waiting around the corner. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that a business is never truly finished. There is always something to improve, something to learn, and another goal to pursue. Over time, I stopped focusing so much on reaching a final destination and started appreciating the process itself. The daily work, the challenges, and the small victories are what make the journey meaningful.
I’ve also learned that nothing worthwhile comes without sacrifice, dedication, and consistent effort. There were times when things seemed impossible, but I discovered that most obstacles can be overcome with persistence, creativity, and a willingness to keep moving forward even when the path isn’t clear.
If there’s one thing I want people to know about our brand, it’s that Sweetaly was built with passion, hard work, and a genuine desire to share a piece of Italian culture with our community. We are proud of what we’ve built, but we’re even more excited about what still lies ahead.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As an Italian, what I appreciate most about Santa Barbara is not just a particular restaurant or attraction, but the lifestyle. If a friend from Italy came to visit for a week, I would tell them not to rush. We would start our mornings with coffee downtown, spend time walking along the waterfront, visit the Mission, explore State Street, and watch the sunset from Butterfly Beach.
Of course, we would enjoy some great local restaurants, fresh seafood by the harbor, and a day in the Santa Ynez Valley wine country. But what I think makes Santa Barbara special is the balance between natural beauty and quality of life. Within a few minutes, you can be at the beach, in the mountains, downtown, or surrounded by vineyards.
I value good food, family, conversation, and enjoying the moment. Santa Barbara reminds me of that way of living. It has a relaxed pace, beautiful scenery, and a strong sense of community. That’s what I would want my friends to experience the most.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to meet so many people throughout my life who have helped make Sweetaly what it is today. No one builds a business alone. Along the way, I’ve been blessed with mentors, friends, business partners, employees, landlords, and customers who believed in me and supported this journey.
Most importantly, I want to thank my wife, Lisa, who has stood by me every step of the way. Starting and growing a business comes with countless challenges, and I couldn’t have done it without her love, patience, and unwavering support.
I also want to thank my wonderful mom, who is no longer with us. She always taught me to pursue my dreams, work hard, and never give up.
There are also several people who deserve special recognition, including Kay and Arnold Clark, Cristiano Creminelli, Jared Lynch, Chris Bowler, and Laura Hancock. I’m deeply grateful for their encouragement, guidance, and friendship over the years.
And of course, I want to thank our amazing employees and loyal customers. Their trust and support are the reason Sweetaly exists today. Any success we’ve had is really the result of many people contributing in different ways, and I’m thankful to all of them.
