We had the good fortune of connecting with Travis & Monay Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Travis & Monay, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The first few years of marriage were what we’d consider “typical”. Both of us were working (Travis in Engineering, and Monay in Social Work). We both dove into our careers and the picture-perfect marriage started to get a little blurry. We were living the“back to back” style of marriage for the first few years. One day we looked up, took an honest look at our relationship, and we realized that we were on track to arrive at a destination that we didn’t realize our actions were choosing. We had challenges along the way: Time, Money, Direction/Information, and Limited Beliefs. We didn’t have the mentors or information to create the life that we wanted to live and become the spouses and parents we wanted to be. We knew that we weren’t the only family going through this, and we wanted to do something about it. So we initially started a podcast (Becoming1Podcast) to encourage tough and honest dialogue among individuals in relationships. The podcast alone left us with the desire to do something greater with the gifts, strengths, and passion that we have. From our own experiences, to watching society disassemble, demoralize, and degrade the Black Family within our communities, we decided to create The Miller Initiative, LLC to restore hope to the Black Family. We now help other young married couples and families address the areas of marriage, family, and finances, in order to defy the odds, create the new narrative, and become the highest version of themselves!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are Travis and Monay Miller, CEO and COO of The Miller Initiative, LLC; a company that assists starter families who are overwhelmed financially, in their marriage, and with raising their children, to restore their life direction, communication, and confidence, so that they can have more peace, less stress and become the highest version of themselves, individually and as a unit. Our mission is to change the narrative of the Black Family by empowering all members to achieve peace, through the pillars of Marriage, Family, and Finances. Our vision is to provide resources and influence to the world, where hope is restored to the Black Family.

The thing that sets us apart from other organizations, is that we address and service the family as a whole; not JUST the man, the woman, or the children… we equip the entire family unit with tools, strategies, and information so that they are empowered to initiate change in their lives.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If a friend was visiting from out of town, one of the first places we’d take them, is to get food! Our family is heavily plant based, so when we find a good vegan/vegetarian spot, we absolutely have to share. Charlotte, NC definitely does not disappoint in the area of food options. We’d go to “Bean Vegan Cuisine” to get their AMAZING vegan shakes, head over to “VelTree Soulful Vegan Cuisine” to grab one of their burgers and Kale Ginger Lemonade, and we would definitely need to stop by “Oh My Soul” for their flavorful and juicy vegan ribs! When it comes to hang-outs, a great eclectic and artsy place to go would be Camp North End. It’s a cluster of art, food, mom and pop shops, and great places to snap a photo. We would definitely make it a point to stop by our local comedy spot, “The Comedy Zone” for a night of laughter! If it’s basketball season, there’s no question that we’d all head out to check out the Hornets live in action!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would like to dedicate our shout-out to Jakiya Brown Thiaw. Jakiya is not just a brand strategist, she is THE brand strategist. She is the founder of Travelingfro Brands LLC. Jakiya supported us, and guided us through the entire process of the brand development. She pushed us to be honest, creative, and authentic when we worked with her. We came to her having recently started our podcast, and all we had was an idea. Jakiya used her background as a lead marketing brand manager, and guided us through the journey of developing our own brand from the ground up… from idea, to actuality. Jakiya is amazingly knowledgeable, patient, honest, and truly wants to see her clients successful in their niches. The Miller Initiative, LLC would not be here today, if it were not for the wisdom, guidence, and support of the worlds most AMAZING brand strategist, Jakiya Brown, Thiaw of Travelingfro Brands LLC.
