We had the good fortune of connecting with Tim Ozbun and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tim, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
There is a lot to think about when starting your own business. You need to think about what type of business you want to do, how to attract and find clients that are interested in you, building a website, portfolio, using social media, etc….. You also need to think about how much you want to invest in your business in terms of advertising to attract clients and equipment you need to upgrade your business. You also have to realize that sometimes business is slow and you may not have as much income coming in.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I always try to be different with my work and try to experiment with different types of photography whether it be shooting fashion events, weddings, celebrations, or other events. I always try to find something unique about each event I shoot and try to capture it in my photos. Sometimes it involves the setting, the lighting, the unique character of each person or persons and even the type of lens or equipment I use. I am always excited about trying out new things that can create the best pictures for my clients, It’s not always easy and sometimes things don’t come out the way you planned, but sometimes the things you don’t plan turn out even better than expected. My philosophy has been to always do my best and try not to compare myself with others because that just lets self-doubt get into my head too much. As long as my clients are happy, I am satisfied knowing I have given my best for them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is difficult to answer because, living in San Diego, there is so much to see and do. There are several great attractions I would take my friend to see including the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, Old Town, Balboa Park and its museums, The USS Midway, Mt. Soledad with its spectacular views, Seaport Village, Balboa Park with its great museums and one can always take in a ball game at Petco Park. Of course with our great weather you can’t forget the beautiful beaches we have here, perfect for walking, jogging, and catching a sunset. As far as eating, there is no end to the number of great diverse places to eat. You can eat Mexican food at Cafe Coyote in Old town, pizza at Fillipi’s or seafood at Anthony’s. Actually, my friend would probably run out of time before running out of things to see and do in San Diego.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are a lot of people I can mention that have helped me throughout my business ventures. It is hard to mention all of them or to specify any one person. My family and friends have been very supportive of my business over the years even though there are some that might not completely understand the type of business I do, the amount of work that goes into it, or my passion for it. Some people ask why I don’t go into something that is more steady or that pays more, but I just tell them this is the career I have chosen. I have also received a lot of support from returning clients who refer me to others, small business and companies I have work with and from make up artists, models, stylists, designers, etc. They have all made me become better at my job and more creative with my work.
