We had the good fortune of connecting with Caitlin Keyser and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caitlin, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
One key factor outsiders do not understand about the hair industry is that hair stylist are undervalued and underpaid. Being a hairstylist is not a hobby, it’s both a career and a passion. Hairstylists are viewed to be on the lower end of the education spectrum. I’ve been in the industry for over 5 years now and we work a lot harder than people think, we continue to educate ourselves, as well as our clients. There is so much more to being a hairstylist than just cutting and coloring. Hair is a art form, and it’s an industry that is highly competitive and thus we continue to grow and learn. Our career is about building strong relationships and trust. We are here to provide a warm and relaxing experience, as well as showing our clients that we value them. I would like people to understand how valuable we are.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am so proud to say that I have worked hard for both my cosmetologist and barber licenses. Going through a strict and structured assistant program has shaped me to be the professional I am today. It was not an easy process but once you finish the program you feel very accomplished. Being an assistant was a daily struggle, feeling that you are not good enough or you will make it. The way to overcome those challenges is self motivation and to push yourself to your full potential. You need to keep your head held high and know your own worth. I am very blessed to be where I am today.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am the type of person who loves to try new places. I love taking long walks on the beach and spending quality time with my friends and family. I love going to the beaches, hiking, lakes, swimming, and traveling. A fun get away place I love going to Big Bear to go up and ski. I’m happy anywhere I go as long as I’m surrounded by positive fun people. There are so many beautiful places around San Diego to go to with spectacular views.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support from my family. They have been supporting me since day one. I am so thankful specifically to my mother because she is the one who has pushed to never give up. I am extremely thankful to everyone who has taught me to better myself. The only way you grow is through constructive criticism, I always try to surround myself with positive mentors, who build my confidence and help me to obtain my own goals. I do continue to attend many education classes and I am thankful for all the opportunities that have been offered to me.
