We had the good fortune of connecting with Terry & Zorka and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Terry & Zorka, how does your business help the community?
At MAKE pizza+salad we have a mission to provide great tasting, quality food at a fair price, with exceptional service. When you break down this statement, the first part is probably obvious, in that like most restaurants, we want our food to taste great; not okay, not pretty good, but GREAT! Our menu lineup includes many chef inspired dishes that are tested and retested until they taste phenomenal. The key to any great tasting dish is to start with quality ingredients. The second part of our mission statement is to provide quality food at a FAIR price. We may not be the least expensive casual restaurant around, but we do use quality ingredients, and take the time and effort to use the freshest, high quality, locally sourced ingredients. While the quality of ingredients may not allow us to be the least expensive, we try to be fair to our customers, and charge a reasonable price for the high quality dishes that we serve. Finally, we don’t believe in good service, we believe in EXCEPTIONAL service. Our guests bring so much joy to our day, that we feel we owe them our best on every visit to MAKE pizza+salad. We may not be perfect, but we will give it our best with each and every guest whether it is their first time visiting our restaurant, or if they are a neighborhood regular. Once we accomplish our mission statement, it is so much easier to provide help to our community. As residents of the East Village, we wanted our restaurant to serve the neighborhood in which we lived. We are big believers in supporting the neighborhood that supports our restaurant. We are actively involved in with the East Village Association, which is a neighborhood association of local businesses. We work closely with neighborhood schools, charities, civic organizations and outreach programs to make our neighborhood better each day.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We believe that our attention to detail and consistency are some of the factors that set us apart from others in the restaurant and service field. We recognize that we may make the same dish hundreds of times per day, but that the guest on the receiving end of our effort is only eating one dish. So while many restaurants operate under the falsehood that getting it right most of the time is good enough, we understand that each and every dish that we make is an experience for the guest, and we want that experience to be exceptional. We don’t expect to achieve perfection every time, but we’ll give our best effort every time.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
San Diego is truly an amazing city. When we have guests in town, we always show off Balboa Park and all of the great civic resources that is holds, like the museums, gardens and of course the San Diego Zoo. Then a drink on the sundeck at the Hotel del Coronado is a must. Stopping off in La Jolla cove to visit the sea lions is always a crowd pleaser too. And eating along the water somewhere is always great, whether it’s overlooking San Diego Bay on Harbor Island or along the embarcadero, or watching the sunset somewhere in the beach communities like Ocean Beach.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people that have contributed to the success of MAKE pizza+salad, starting with family and friends. We also rely heavily on the support of our vendors and business partners. And of course, we would not be where we are without the great efforts of the staff that make up the MAKE pizza+salad Team.
