We had the good fortune of connecting with Tai Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tai, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I created my 5 Steps to Flawless Vegan Brush line to cater to the inner makeup artist in everyone. Women would always ask me about doing a natural look, how to fill in brows properly or blend foundation flawlessly. I developed the makeup brushes with step-by-step instructions to answer those questions. I thought a lot about what I have time for in my own day to day, being a working mom and wife. I like to look put together, but I need to be able to do it quickly. I didn’t have time to “bake”, or highlight and contour, but I wanted to look just as glam. The makeup technique taught with my brushes is that perfect look between no makeup and a full face of makeup. The finished look is a fresh polished face that can be worn anywhere!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Moving from Houston to Los Angeles, I started my career as a fashion designer/celebrity stylist. Sure, I worked odd jobs in between gigs to make ends meet, but I’ve known what I wanted to do since I was 16. Personal shopping for Beyoncé and Solange at age 17, I gained so much confidence in my stylist capabilities. I would sketch designs, and have them made so clients could wear them. By the age of 23, I was thriving in LA, dressing Venus Williams, Hill Harper, and many others. I thought for sure that I’d be doing that for a long time. I could always do makeup, I was self taught, so doing it on clients for photo shoots and for fashion shows was second nature. It wasn’t hard for me to transition into doing makeup, so once I started traveling with celebrities for personal glam, that’s all I wanted to do. Fast forward to me joining the Local 706 Hair & Makeup Artist Union in 2019 and working in television and film full time. I currently work on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. I’ve had to face plenty of obstacles in my journey, and the industry is not always pleasant, but I choose to focus on life’s positives. Recently, my 5 Steps to Flawless Cruelty Free makeup brushes were picked up by Naimie’s, a very popular makeup store in Los Angeles. I am beyond excited about it, and even more eager to assist women all over the world in doing their own makeup effortlessly! The present pandemic has shifted how we do glam time, so a DIY brush set is the perfect solution!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
At the moment, I’d like to skip this question due to the state of the country. I wouldn’t go anywhere right now honestly.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother Gloria Young is the reason I ever got into makeup. I fell in love with process of getting ready early on.

My faith and my family for pushing me daily, also my tribe of girlfriends that call me for makeup tips, use my product, and show up for themselves always! It’s women like them that make my brand so important.
