We had the good fortune of connecting with Robin Tan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robin, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
I know that almost all restaurants have taken a huge hit over the past year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so I have been trying to help local restaurants in the San Diego area by promoting their businesses. It breaks my heart every time I hear about another restaurant shutting down because I know that restaurant could have been someone’s lifelong dream or passion that they invested all their heart and soul in. It has also been an extremely tough year for everyone, not just those in the restaurant industry, given the departure from normalcy and stresses of dealing with the pandemic. For myself, food has been a source of joy during the past year when it seems like there are so few things to look forward to, and I hope that by sharing some of my favorite restaurants, cuisines and dishes that it has also helped others find some joy in the middle of all the craziness that has been happening.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Although Instagram is an app that typically involves photos and quick scrolling, I have tried to set myself apart from other food influencers by being as informative as possible. I try to include descriptions of the dishes that I tried, my recommendations, the location, and other important information about the restaurant/business in all of my posts. I know most people just scroll through Instagram quickly looking at photos, but my hope is that if one of my pictures catches someone’s eye, that they don’t have to go on a wild goose chase trying to figure out where the picture is from or what dish I got or if it was even good.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friend were visiting for the week, I would make sure we hit up my favorite taco spots (Tacos El Gordo, Oscar’s, Taco Stand, PB Fish Shop), my favorite Taco Tuesday spot (Sandbar for TKO tacos) and my favorite burrito spot (Lucha Libre) because what’s a trip to San Diego without delicious Mexican food?! I would also make sure to hit my favorite San Diego happy hour spots: Born & Raised, Craft & Commerce, Herringbone and Cardellino. I would also make sure to hit up my other favorite restaurants: Juniper & Ivy for a fancy dinner, Tasty Noodle House for Chinese food, Piacere Mio or Catania for Italian food, The Nood Bar for delicious noodles, Crack Shack for unbelievable fried chicken, Dija Mara for Indonesian food, CHIKO for amazing Asian fusion, and Phil’s BBQ for mouthwatering BBQ. We would definitely have to hit up some hikes to work off all of the food, so I would take them to my favorite hikes, Torrey Pines Gliderport to Black’s Beach, Eagle Rock, and Devil’s Punchbowl, along with the iconic Cowles and Potato Chip Rock hikes. Another fun activity would be to paddleboard around Mission Bay and catch the sunset at Sunset Cliffs. We would also bike around Coronado Island, check out Coronado Beach and afterwards, check out the renowned Hotel del Coronado, including an oceanside dinner at Serea during sunset. No trip to San Diego is complete without seeing the seals at La Jolla Cove and a trip to the San Diego Zoo. We’d definitely have to do at least 1 brewery crawl to hit up Ballast Point, Karl Strauss, Stone, Mikkeller, Modern Times, and Belching Beaver. Time permitting, we’d do a day trip to Temecula to hit up some wineries or visit some closer wineries in the Escondido area, like Altipiano or Bernardo Winery. We would have to visit my favorite speakeasies for some more drinks: Raised by Wolves and Realm of the 52 Remedies. Finally, if it’s baseball season, I would plan a trip to see the Padres (but let’s be real, I’m mostly there for the delicious food and drinks!).

I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my amazing fiancé, Jorge. He has always stood by me and supported me through everything, whether it is switching careers, deciding to play women’s tackle football (he came to every single game, which is more than most of the players even attended), and traveling across the country to watch me play a child’s game.
