We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Zemple and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, is there something you believe many others might not?
I see the “positive thinking” campaign as detrimental to our society. While the intention of being positive is beautiful, it is limiting. Positive thinking does not leave room for people to be honest with themselves or other people. Positive thinking makes us hide in our shell when life is hard. This makes us feel even more alone and in the dark. How, then, do we as a human, or society, progress if we can’t have honest conversations?

People also judge themselves for having “negative” thoughts (e.g. I “shouldn’t” be thinking that way.) Judgements weigh us down and hold us back from living our best life. The reality is our thoughts come and we have no control over what comes. We do, however, have a choice over which thoughts to subscribe to. Instead of positive thinking, my invitation is to think authentically. Be true to what is real for you. Your authenticity will crack that shell open so you can shine your pearl! The whole world will be brighter when you do!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My organization, Life Shucker, was created with the idea that you are a pearl. It is the essence, the heart, of who you are. The radiance of your pearl was created by layers of strength through the grit of life’s experiences. Each pearl has a shell. When life brings challenges we often close the shell around our pearl to protect our self. The problem is the shell creates a barrier between you and the world making you feel disconnected to yourself and others. The shell also hides the beauty of who you are and holds you back from sharing your gifts with the world in the fullest expression. Eventually the once protective shells start to hold us back from reaching our greatest potential. It is then time to shuck the shell open with love to let your pearl shine leading to more meaningful success.

So, that is what I do. I shuck everyone and everything I can!!! I help individuals and organizations find their deeper purpose and translate that into authentic success through transformative coaching, love-based leadership programs, workshops, retreats, books, and motivational speaking.

My book, Shuck This Way, hit the #1 best seller on Amazon for personal transformation. The journey has been gritty to say the least. The most recent grit was caring my loved one back to health after a cancer diagnosis. To turn that grit in to a pearl, I now have a coaching program specifically designed for caregivers of all kinds. We all have grit in our lives. It is what we do with our grit that matters most.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Anything outside! Bike around the bay, picnic on any of the beaches, hike to Potato Chip Rock, take a plein air painting class with Kris Finch art, watch a sunset from Torrey Pines, build a bonfire on Fiesta Island, collect sand dollars on Coronado at low tide, or do yoga in the park with Yoga Six in Liberty Station. The joy is endless!!!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am grateful for soooo many people supporting me in my dreams! My parents, Drs. Ron and Mary Hulnick, Dr. Robert Holden, and Duane Roth to name a few. All of them have seen the best in me before I could see it myself.
