We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Middleton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve never been good at working for someone else, I decided i wanted to work for myself so i could create my own schedule and be able to travel more. I also was in a engineering based job and i wanted to be more creative. and wanted to grow other forms of income off of my main business. I wanted to make a sustainable business while making a difference to others but also loving my job.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I specialize in Boudoir my style is very moody and i also run a rental studio for other photographers to shoot their art in as well, my space is very vintage with lots of gold tones. I think what sets me apart is how i treat my clients both in my photography business and my rental studio space. Running your own business is never easy but if you don’t give up it’s always worth it. It’s always challenges and sucess isn’t an uphill climb there are lots of potholes and downhills as well. to overcome is to adapt and to persevere. The biggest lesson i’ve learned is that self employment is a mindset and alot of people are not going to understand so you have to believe in yourself and surround yourself with like minded people. My brand is really focused on the empowerment of women. I have alot of other things in the works for next year and I cant wait to make happen. I didn’t come from much and i still have a long way to go but i’m excited to see where i take my business. it started from nothing and to continue to watch it grow is amazing. When you’re self employed your business is completely reliant on you and will only grow as much as you water it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m based out of Columbus, Ohio. Lets assume it was summer, i would take them swimming at alum creek, maybe take a cooking class at franklin conservatory where they use ingredients from their community garden, have brunch at Catalina’s, check out the Book loft which have over 30 rooms. Get a drink at Lincoln Social a cool rooftop bar in the Short North. Check out the adult lazy river at Zoombezi Bay and Check out some local brewery’s. I would definitly make them go to Groovy Plants. which is my favorite nursery. and probably have a few fires at my house. and depending on the moon phase go down to the astronomy park on the clearest night. so you can enjoy some outdoor activities on top of some of the cities.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I was very lucky in having a supportive family and friend base, My mom and my best friend specifically were real MVP’s through all the highs and lows of my business. Helping me build a portfolio, getting props and theme ideas helping remodel spaces and being an assistant when needing an extra hand for a shoot. i’ve also gone through alot of workshops and bought alot of guides through educators such as Marco Ibenez that has really helped me grow in my craft.
