We had the good fortune of connecting with Grace Tarrac and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Grace, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
In August 2020 my husband and I purchased a second-hand laser engraving machine, which he then taught me how to use. At the time, I was battling breast cancer, so this new hobby was a great outlet for me to keep my mind busy and discover a new skill that I didn’t know I had. The opportunity to create unique gifts and other custom projects lead us to finally take the next step to becoming an official business in October 2020.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have extensive experience in retail and customer service. The best part of my day was always when I really felt that I met my customer’s needs by listening and being patient. After I had my twin boys, I chose to stay at home and care for them until they could go to school full time. Once I saw the opportunity to run a business from home, I thought that it would be a great fit. Little did I know that I had to put a lot of time and effort into developing some new skills.
We started with wood signs and Christmas ornaments but I wanted to make something unique. Then I came across photographs etched on wood and tile and that’s what I decided to do. But it wasn’t as easy as it seemed. Working with lasers can be very challenging, especially when it comes to photographs. I have burned many pieces of wood with no success, but if someone else could do it, I could do it too! Many trials and errors later, I got to a place where I was satisfied with the results. But I didn’t want to only engrave photographs, I wanted beautiful and unique frames as well. So, I had to research and design creative frames, too!
My favorite part of all of this is the customer`s reactions when they see the final product! They always say that it came out better than they had expected, and this is what makes my day!
It has been a challenge juggling home life, family, physical and mental health, alongside a new business but life is about finding new opportunities when times are hard. Every day is a new chance to make things better. Starting a business or following your dream isn’t always easy, but with persistence and a good attitude, you’ll continue to learn new skills and do incredible things.
Now, we are proud to offer a range of laser engraved, custom products and gifts.
We add TLC (Tender Loving Care) into everything we do and are dedicated to helping people create their own thoughtful and unique products by providing digital previews, creative ideas, and support to our customers along the way. All of our products are made with TLC by TLC.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had some Brazilian friends visiting the U.S. for the first time, we would have so much to do! Day 1 – San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park and dinner at Benihana for an unforgettable restaurant experience
Day 2 – Brunch in Old Town and then a day at Sea World!
Day 3 – Check out Queen Califia`s Magical Circle at Kit Carson Park and the nearby Safari Park
Day 4 – iFly indoor skydiving in Vista, then try some unique and delicious tacos at Craft and Taco Lounge in Escondido
Day 5 and 6 – We’d go to Hollywood, L.A. to check out the walk of fame before lunch at Hard Rock Cafe
Day 7 – We’d go shopping at Las Americas Shopping Outlets in San Ysidro
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a huge shout out to my husband who introduced me to something that was completely new to me, something that allowed me to express my creativity. I’d also like to thank our family and friends who’s love and support helped us to succeed on this entrepreneurial journey.
