We had the good fortune of connecting with Patrick McCuen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patrick, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think the success of my creative endeavors are twofold: 1 is to be consistent and 2 is to have fun. I think neither can survive without the other. If you are consistent, but not enjoying yourself, It could very easily lend itself to burnout. If you’re having a blast doing what you’re doing, the ideas will continue to flow and there won’t be any problem being consistent.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m kind of humbled in being invited to this interview for this series. I have a Tiktok account mostly featuring me & my dog, Indy and we do goofy stuff in the spirit of having a good time, connecting with people & leaving them better than we first met them. We had a series go viral and what set it apart I think was that it told a story partially rooted in truth and partially embellished to enhance the storytelling. It was easy in the sense that it was so much fun to exercise this creative outlet., but it was difficult in that it did consume a bit of time. It’s not necessarily my profession, so I was juggling this as well as “normal life”.
I think the most proud I would say is that Newsweek published an article about the viral series. Never did I ever imagine that would happen.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is a tough question. My favorite thing is to show off my city to my friends & family. I can’t give away ALL of my secrets, but there are a few… I’m a big fan of food, drinks and being outside. Since my non-local best friend is a surfer, we would hit up my favorite spots, including Scripps & Sunset Cliffs. The itinerary would have to feature some of my favorite food spots like swagyu in PB, Oscar’s, Menya Ultra Ramen, Regents Pizza, & get a little fancy at The Winery restaurant. At night, we’d have to check out an awesome speakeasy like Grass Skirt and couldn’t forget the classic dive bar: The Night Owl.
During our days, we would grab some paddleboards and head out on Mission Bay, skate the boardwalk in mission beach or at the linda vista skatepark and of course take Indy out at dog beach. Sunday is for church where you’d find us at The Rock in Point Loma – those are some of the best people I know.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I pull a lot of inspiration for my Tiktok account from Indy, my 3 year old blue heeler/border collie pup. He has always been an influx of energy to me regarding my social media and he’s so dang cute, I would have to attribute the success of our account to him.
