We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Cain and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
It is a must in business and in life. You just can’t live a successful and fulfilling life without some sort of risk. I took a risk starting my own podcast two years ago. It was scary doing Laura Cain After Dark at first because I thought, “WHO is going to listen and HOW are they going to listen.” In two years, podcasts in general have gained much popularity and they are more accessible than ever. We (Laura Cain After Dark) are now at 150,000 downloads and our reach is worldwide.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was part of the legendary Jeff and Jer Showgram for 27 years. I started when I was just a pup right out of college. After disbanding in 2017, we all went our separate ways…Jerry retired and Jeff moved to northern California. Since then, I have served as a traffic reporter on various iHeartMedia stations as well as LMA stations. I also do weekends on Star 94.1 as an on-air personality. I also have a podcast that I do with my two BFFs called Laura Cain After Dark. We’ve been at it for two years now. New episodes drop every Tuesday and Thursday evening.
It has not been easy. This business, the radio industry, has changed so much from it’s heyday in the 90’s and early 2000’s. It’s not as personality-driven as it used to be and the big money salaries are few and far between. The industry has changed and so I’ve had to change along with it.
My passion is radio…still. I love it with all my heart. I always have. Back when I was 10 years old I’d make radio shows with my little tape recorder.
I have learned that as much as you want to, you just can’t give up. When things get hard, lean in even harder.
My brand is all about realness. I am the most genuine personality out there. I share absolutely everything with my listeners, which sometimes makes me cringe when I listen back to it. But, that’s just the way I am. I believe that we are all the same. We share the same struggles and the same joys and I’m just a voice who shares it all with the world publicly.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my podcast partners, Linda Zirkus and Erik Rimmer. Without their determination, dedication, consistency, passion and tireless efforts, the Laura Cain After Dark Podcast wouldn’t be what it is today. Through this podcast, we have created a family of listeners who love and support one another.
