We had the good fortune of connecting with Madi Behrman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Madi, what are you inspired by?
A lot of the inspiration for my work comes from my love of nature, and fashion. Typically, I find those as a juxtaposition, so I try to challenge myself to not only seek out the most sustainably and ethically sourced items to work with, but also show that second hand and vintage items can still be fashionable. Between you and me, nearly all of the props and outfits you see in my photographs have been resourced.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As an artist I feel I can become overly critical of my work. One of the biggest challenges while adapting into a business was learning to let go of perfectionism. When photographing I tend to have a certain vision, almost like a montage playing, so I had found it difficult to let go of getting the “perfect shot”. Portraiture has taught me to keep on my toes and work innovatively. Sometimes things don’t play out as planned and honestly that’s part of the adventure. Wardrobe malfunctions often happen, locations can become crowded, and posing not always feels conventional. I’m always most proud when I’m able to walk away knowing my client was comfortable and having fun during our time together.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a North County local, when visiting the city my go to’s are to start the morning at the Encinitas Meditation Garden, then head down the coast to enjoy the Ocean Beach Dog Beach. After the dog beach, I’d check out the Ocean Beach Farmers Market, explore Sunset Cliffs, and finish the trip with the most amazing curry from Bahn Thai in Hillcrest!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shoutout to my amazing support team back home. Rudy, Mom, thank you for your endless encouragement and unconditional support. I wouldn’t be where I’m at today without you both!
