We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristy West and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristy, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks definitely played a big part in my life and career. Sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone and experience life outside of the box instead of living a life where you keep asking yourself “what if I did this or what would’ve happened if I did that”. I’d never thought that my business would be so busy like how it is now. I was definitely scared to open my first business at such a young age. I had so many questions about running a nail salon. I’ve been in the nail industry at such a young age so I already knew a lot of things. But I definitely wish I had more guidance by someone that has a business of their own for years. I’ve worked at a lot of nail salons growing up, even though I was so young I had really big shoes to fill. I was a manager at the age of 13, I had to step out of my comfort zone and take charge. A lot of my employees were triple my age at the time, they were around my parents age! I was scared but I took that risk and it was the best experience ever. Now, 11 years later and I have my own nail salon.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Well what makes MY salon different from others is the hospitality, vibe and work ethic. When my mom came up with this idea of having our own salon, I really wasn’t 100% sure. But when I stepped foot into our salon now, I love everything about it, from the wall to our color scheme. My salon makes you feel like you’re in a 5 star restaurant but with a very affordable price. I want my customers to feel special and well taking care of as soon as they stepped foot in our salon. I didn’t just throw some chairs, tables and call it a day. Everything is so organized and so well thought out… the floors, chairs, supply room and my famous “Nail-it!” Grass wall! Everyone is definitely shocked when they walk into my salon, it’s so nice and bright. You definitely get that luxurious feeling without the big price tag.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
There are so many GREAT local spots in SD and I’m going to name a few of my favorite spots. First is Kono’s Cafe for breakfast. It is so cheap there and you can also enjoy your breakfast with a view on the beach. Whenever I’m craving for pho, Shank & Bone is my favorite spot to go to for that. I love the atmosphere, their service is on point and the place is so clean. If you ever want a good margaritas head down to El Chingon for their famous bad ass margarita, it comes with a Mexican ice cream and candy! It is delicious, a little pricey but definitely worth it! On fifth in downtown there is so many great bars and restaurants, you can’t never go wrong even you picked a place blind folded !
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
All of my friends! Who’ve been there for me since DAY 1 ! When I wasn’t even good at what I do yet but they believed in me and my craft! I love you Maria, Susan and Karla ! They used to come to me faithfully for their nails when I first got started! I knew I wasn’t at my full potential yet and I’m still not there. But they were there to root for me ! I love y’all
