We had the good fortune of connecting with Kiah Hagen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kiah, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
We created Pacific Pups Products to support my non-profit animal rescue, Pacific Pups Rescue. At the time, we (my fiance, who is also my business partner, and I) were funding my rescue out of our own pocket and knew that was not sustainable. We started manufacturing and selling fun, safe, and high quality dog toys, hoping to make a little bit of money  for the rescue, but the brand took off. I attribute our fast growth and continued success to the fact that each purchase directly helps the dogs in our rescue, and customer’s can feel good about helping a homeless dog when they choose our toys. People can see on our website and social media pages the pets that they directly helped to save by choosing to purchase our dog toys!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

What sets our pet product business apart from others is that we create our toys to fund our non-profit animal rescue. Not only do a large percentage of our profits go directly to the dogs and cats we save in our animal rescue, but we also know we are making great quality toys because all of the different types of dogs in our rescue are able to product test for us! We make toys for all different size dogs, and make sure to safety all of our toys.

What excites me the most is seeing people tagging us in photos on social media, showing us how much their dogs love Pacific Pups Products toys. Also, people will message us that they bought our toys for dogs in their local animal shelter or rescue, so they are giving back twice! That is always very special to me.

Starting the business wasn’t easy, mainly because we were not expecting, nor prepared for, the rapid growth we experienced right away. We started this company hoping to make just enough to cover the monthly expenses for the dogs in my rescue, and almost immediately (without any advertising) sales took off. We were sold out a lot faster than expected, and found ourselves needing to manufacture a lot more product, and more often, than anticipated. Perhaps the biggest and most painful lesson we learned is that we need to have capital onhand and keep a close eye on inventory so that we can order enough product with enough lead time, to avoid being out of stock.

The biggest thing I want the world to know about Pacific Pups is that our company is a labor of love that was founded to save as many lives as possible. We have rescued over 600 animals so far, and will continue to keep saving homeless pets as long as Pacific Pups Products is funding the rescue. We also donate a lot of toys to animal shelters, and other animal rescues – we are happy to provide toys for dogs in need.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Anytime a friend comes to visit, we go to Venice Beach. I love showing them all of the vendors on the boardwalk, and we hang out on the beach. We always take guests to Hininos for the best burger on the westside, for the deep history of the place, and for some great music. We always hop on bikes and ride along the bike path down to the Santa Monica Pier. We love Big Deans near the pier in Santa Monica for a down to earth beach vibe.

I also love taking people to Malibu Cafe for an afternoon – there is peddle boating, lawn games, a lot of great food and drink options, and a beautiful place to spend the day.

Paddleboarding off of Mother’s Beach in Marina del Rey is always a must, too!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To my fiance and business partner, Edgar, who has worked tirelessly along side me to grow this brand with the goal being to rescue as many homeless animals as we can through our high quality pet products.
