We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsey Schmidt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lindsey, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
From a young age, I instinctively found myself in the role of a helper. Whether it was supporting friends through personal challenges in grade school or offering guidance to others, I felt a deep sense of fulfillment in listening and providing direction. As I progressed in my career and explored various healthcare avenues, I consistently found myself drawn to roles that involved counseling and therapeutic support. It became increasingly clear that my purpose was to be a therapist.

I began my career in community-based settings, where I worked with diverse populations, including children with special needs, high-risk individuals, and maternal health clients. I also spent time in the school system, where I was able to expand my experience and develop my skills. While these experiences were both fulfilling and educational, I often felt restricted by the limitations of the settings. The therapeutic space was frequently small and crowded, and at times, the only available option was to walk and talk with clients in informal environments such as open lunch tables.

Despite these constraints, my passion for therapy only grew stronger. I realized that I wanted to create an environment that was not only therapeutic but also tailored to the individual needs of my clients. This desire led me to establish my own practice. My goal was to create a space that was nurturing and comfortable, particularly for those who are sensory-seeking. Drawing on my diverse background, I was able to design a practice that was both creative and unstructured while maintaining a strong foundation of safety and support. My aim was to provide an environment where individuals could feel free to grow and heal at their own pace.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I established my private practice in 2015 during a pivotal time in my life as a new mother. Seeking greater flexibility in my schedule, I recognized this as the ideal opportunity to take the next step in my career.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic presented an unexpected challenge. Shortly before, I had signed a lease for a larger office space that I was excited to grow into. However, due to the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, many of my clients were understandably hesitant to attend in-person sessions. Given my specialization in pregnancy and postpartum-related issues, I was working with individuals who needed support more than ever, yet in-person visits were not always feasible or safe.

Transitioning to virtual therapy became essential in order to continue providing consistent care. This shift required significant adjustment for both myself and my clients as we navigated new technology and adapted to a different mode of connection. Initially, I was uncertain about the long-term sustainability of virtual care. However, client feedback quickly demonstrated its effectiveness. Many clients appreciated the increased accessibility and reported feeling more at ease engaging in therapy from the comfort and safety of their own environments.

What I would like the world to know about my brand is that my practice is grounded in the core principles of integrity and creativity. I believe that effective counseling begins with cultivating a supportive, nonjudgmental space where individuals feel safe to explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. My approach is a mix of somatic and client-centered in one. I feel that therapy is a journey and it should allow each individual’s unique circumstances, values, and goals guide the session. I do not subscribe to a one-size-fits-all model; rather, I tailor my approach to meet the specific needs of each client.

My work is also grounded in a neuro-affirming and trauma-informed framework, delivered with deep compassion. My goal is not to “fix” individuals, but to support them in developing greater self-understanding, reducing overwhelm, and building a life that aligns with their needs and values.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I feel incredibly fortunate to have spent most of my life in such a beautiful city as San Diego. One of my favorite places to bring out-of-town guests is Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, particularly during the summer months. This location holds a deep sense of nostalgia for me, as I spent much of my childhood there with friends and family.

During the summer, I especially enjoy visiting in the late afternoon when the crowds begin to thin. A personal tradition of mine includes stopping at Rico’s Taco Shop on the way to the beach to pick up Mexican food and refreshments for a casual picnic. Beach chairs or blankets are essential for fully enjoying the experience.

Depending on the season, the water is often warm enough for a swim, or at the very least, a relaxing walk along the shoreline. Sunset is a particularly special time, offering a peaceful and almost magical atmosphere. On Fridays, live music at the beach adds to the experience, creating a lively yet relaxed environment that is perfect for unwinding, socializing, or simply taking in the surroundings.

The evening often concludes with a visit to Cali Cream for ice cream. Over a long weekend, I also like to incorporate outdoor activities such as hiking. One of my favorite trails is at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, which offers both a great workout and stunning coastal views.

After a hike, I typically enjoy a meal along the coast. My go-to spots include Pizza Port and Fidel’s Little Mexico. If the evening continues, I often recommend catching a show or enjoying a drink at Belly Up Tavern, a well-known venue for live music and entertainment.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family definitely deserves some credit for my success, especially my husband. Their consistent support and encouragement have been vital in enabling me to pursue and ultimately establish my own practice.
