We had the good fortune of connecting with Vera Ross and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vera, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
I built Coach Vera because I understand firsthand how overwhelming it can feel to try to take care of your health when life is already pulling you in every direction. And for women navigating perimenopause and menopause, that challenge becomes even more personal — and more urgent.
The hormonal shifts of this stage of women’s lives are real. Weight that used to come off easily now settles differently. Energy fluctuates. Sleep suffers. And the confidence you once had in your own body can start to feel distant. Most fitness programs aren’t designed with any of this in mind — and that’s exactly the gap I’ve dedicated my career to closing.
With a BA in Psychology and a Master’s in Public Health Education, I use evidence-based, cognitive-behavioral coaching to get to the root of why change feels so hard — and to help women build habits that work with their changing bodies, not against them. I design highly individualized strength training, nutrition, and lifestyle programs that are flexible enough to evolve as you do, and sustainable enough to last a lifetime.
The results my clients experience go far beyond the scale. Women I work with have normalized their cholesterol and blood sugar levels, regained strength and energy, and rediscovered a sense of confidence and ownership over their health. That transformation doesn’t just change a person — it changes how she shows up for her family, her work, and her community.
I serve women in San Diego through in-home personal training, and women everywhere through virtual coaching and my online membership — so no matter where you are in this journey, support is available. My small group coaching brings an added layer of community connection, because we’re always stronger together.
Perimenopause and menopause are not the end of feeling strong, vital, and well. In my experience, for many women, it’s just the beginning of finally putting themselves first.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets my coaching practice apart from other trainers is that I don’t just hand out a workout plan or a meal guide — it’s the why behind everything I do. Most fitness programs tell you what to do. I help you understand why you’ve struggled to do it — and then we address that together.
With a BA in Psychology and a Master’s in Public Health Education, I bring tools to the table that most personal trainers simply don’t have. I use evidence-based, cognitive-behavioral coaching techniques to get to the root of each client’s habits, patterns, and barriers — and build a program around their real life, not an idealized version of it. Everything I design is completely individualized. No cookie-cutter workouts. No generic meal plans. Just a system that’s built for you, and flexible enough to evolve as you do.
I specialize in working with women whose bodies and needs have changed — particularly women navigating perimenopause and menopause. I meet them exactly where they are, without judgment, and with deep empathy. Because I’ve been there myself.
After college, I went from competitive collegiate runner to stressed, sedentary office worker — and I watched my own health suffer the consequences. Too much stress, too little sleep, poor nutrition, and no movement. I was working more than full time trying to hold down a corporate job while building my coaching business on the side. Eventually, I made the decision to walk away from my corporate jobs to focus solely on helping others reclaim their health. That decision changed everything — for me, and for the hundreds of clients I’ve had the privilege of working with since.
Building a business from scratch while working full time is no small feat, and the fitness industry is noisy and crowded. Standing out meant going deeper rather than louder — leading with behavioral science, building genuine relationships, and letting results speak for themselves. Earning the trust of women who have tried and failed before requires patience, consistency, and real care. I’ve learned that sustainable change is slow — and that’s not a flaw, it’s the whole point. I’ve learned to celebrate small wins with my clients, because small wins are what become lasting transformation.
What I’m most proud of isn’t any single program or credential — it’s my clients. The woman who told me she “doesn’t like exercise” who now shows up consistently and feels stronger than she has in years. The clients who have brought their cholesterol and blood sugar levels down to normal ranges through exercise and nutrition modifications. The women who have lost 20+ pounds and — more importantly — kept it off. The long-term relationships that have spanned years, because when something truly works, people stay.
I also know that health is never just physical. The mental and emotional side of this journey is just as important, and I’ve built Coach Vera around that truth. Community matters too — my small group workouts and online membership exist because women don’t just need coaching, we need connection. We are always stronger together.
What I would like the world to know about my work is this: perimenopause and menopause are not a decline. They are an invitation to finally put yourself first. It is never too late to build strength, change your habits, or feel good in your body again. I am not just a trainer. I am a long-term partner in your health journey, and I am in your corner for all of it.
Real results come from real relationships. That’s what Coach Vera is built on — and it’s what I show up to deliver every single day.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love when friends and family come to visit me in San Diego, because those are the times in which I can truly enjoy our beautiful city and all it has to offer! I would start of with a morning hike around the Otay reservoir- it’s one of my favorite spots for views and bird watching. Then I would do a coffee and pastry at Bread and Cie cafe in Hillcrest, before getting a bigger breakfast at the Harbor Breakfast cafe in Little Italy. After a big breakfast of their organic eggs and sweet potato and beet hash, I would take my guests for a stroll through the Little Italy neighborhood, maybe grabbing a post-meal coffee at my go-to cafe, Pappalecco. I would definitely book a yoga or aerial yoga class at Tribute in La Jolla, and then eat at their cafe for a delicious vegan lunch. After lunch at Trilogy, we would take another walk around La Jolla cove- I love to walk along the coast looking at the waves, the views stretching north, and of course the seals! Depending on the day, I could take my guests to one of many outdoor craft or farmer’s markets to do some local shopping, and then I would head to Bosforo in Normal Heights for dinner.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to recognize my colleague Magdalena Patterson, an amazing yoga instructor and all around wonderful human! Magdalena gave me a huge leg up in the fitness industry by mentoring me early on in my career. She had me take over her spot in a private training facility in one of San Diego’s best locations, as she was going on maternity leave for her first child and moving out of the area. Getting that space in that gym launched my career to a different level, and I have been able to grow my business thanks in large part to her doing that for me. Magdalena also deserves a lot of credit for her work as an incredible yoga instructor! Since mentoring me through my early days of private personal coaching, she has launched her own yoga business, which she balances alongside being a hardworking full time mom. I will never forget her help so early on in my career!
