We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Keener-Welsch and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jay, how do you define success?
I think success is setting and meeting both achievable and challenging goals. In order to be successful, you must first be able to have a strong awareness of where you or your business is at. From there, you can set goals and determine a path forward that will help you grow and meet those goals. You cannot simply defer to a success from the past to propel forward. It’s being able to set goals, achieve them, and then turn around and look at what the next step is to keep going further. This involves a lot of analyzing, adapting to change and trends, and overcoming obstacles to constantly reinvent yourself. I think the key is that you don’t stop. No matter how small or big the win is, celebrate the steps along the way and continue to set the next goals and steps to growing your success. Don’t look back!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
By day, I have been a manager in retail for over 20 years. I have been fortunate to work for some great companies, and help to inspire people to create their perfect home space and for about the past 10 years to make their own art. I think the most rewarding thing beyond seeing satisfied customers, is being able to train and develop employees. Taking them from their first day to helping them develop their skills and discover their abilities, it is always affirming to realize the impact you can have on an individual and give them something positive to carry with them on their journey. Beyond that, I am an artist of many forms. My degree is in theatre, and I love to do musical theatre. I have also been digging up my artistic abilities again for the first time in years, and have been starting to paint. Through all of this, my husband and I have also started our own business in order to start thinking about our retirement and ways to start enjoying life and the things we want to do more of. I think it’s never to late to start thinking about what you want from life, and how to reinvent yourself in order to get it. I serve as the creative director for men’s fitness clothing e-commerce store. It has been fun playing with designs, colors, logos, styles, and creating our brand. I am enjoying the journey and where it is taking us, as we continue to develop the brand and even have sights on another business adventure.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
San Diego is such a beautiful city, and there is a never ending list of places to go and things to do. Of course a lot of those things involve being by the Pacific Ocean on the many unique beaches. I always like to head to Torrey Pines State Beach in Del Mar where you can see the beautiful cliffs, beach, and ocean. Some of the most breathtaking views, and very different from beaches that East Coasters are uses to. The hiking trails above are also a great way to take in these views. We always have to hit La Jolla shores to check out the marine life. Another favorite ocean spot is Mission Beach/Pacific Beach. I love being able to walk the boardwalk, check out the views from Crystal Pier, and some of the great food and vendors like Sandbar in Mission Beach. Great vibes, awesome seafood and tacos, and the House Melon Margarita can’t be beat. Of course, a must stop is always Sunset Cliffs-some of the best vibes and views in the city that are So San Diego! A trip to Coronado is also a ususal, stopping by to see the San Diego skyline across the bay and of course the Hotel Del and beach. Beyond that, there are so many great little spots in the local neighborhoods-Normal Heights, North Park, South Park, Hillcrest. Some faves are Parkhouse Eatery for dinner in University Heights (the Flat Iron Steak and Mixed Seafood Grill are always prepared perfectly) and some of our favorite LGBTQ+ spots in Hillcrest (Mo’s, Baja Betty’s and Gossip Grill).

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I feel very fortunate that I have found a great support system throughout every phase of my life, and I have worked with so many incredible mentors and colleagues throughout my career. I would have to say that I have been blessed with four amazing parents who have supported my journey (often on the road less traveled) and always inspired me to follow my own path. They believed in me and have always been there through all of the ups and downs. Beyond that, I give credit to my husband and business partner whom really is the one who pushes me and inspires me every day. He has given me the safe space to really explore who I am, and what I want from life. We truly inspire each other to reinvent ourselves and find ways to achieve our goals and the lifestyle we want together.
