We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Hamilton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My business actually started off as more of a hobby than an actual business- I was a college lacrosse coach at the time COVID hit and our season was canceled, leaving me with nothing but time on my hands. I was a huge fan of a bunch of food bloggers that I follow on social media, and I’ve always dreamed of working in the food industry in some way. So I decided to start a food blog and teach myself how to photograph food. Once I realized how much I loved it (and also lucrative the food blogging world can be), I decided to take my hobby and turn it into a business! Starting my own business has been nothing short of challenging, but it’s also been extremely rewarding.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a food blogger and photographer, my main goal is to bring delicious, easy-to-make recipes to my readers, and provide drool-worthy photos to go along with them! My blog, Bake & Bacon, is all about breakfast and baked goods – my two favorite things.
Believe it or not, I actually didn’t know how to work a professional camera before starting my blog. I borrowed a friend’s DSLR camera and bought a very basic intro to food photography course, and went from there! Learning to shoot food in a way that captures my reader’s attention and makes them want to click on my recipes has been such a challenge. After investing in my business (photography courses) and practicing for a long time, my photography has finally improved to a point where I actually shoot for other bloggers and brands!
A major lesson I’ve learned along the way is that you can make anything a reality if you put the time and effort into it. I started this as a hobby and turned it into my full-time career in about a year. Now I make more than I did in my previous job and I love what I do more than anything else!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well since I am a foodie we would obviously be going to all my favorite places to eat. Starting with coffee from Communal, Dark Horse, or Holsem in North Park, followed by an acai bowl from Northside Shack (the best bowls in SD). We would be spending most of our time at the beach, I always like to take out-of-towners to OB and Torrey Pines (we usually take them on the Torrey Pines trails too). For lunch and dinners, we are hitting up Pete’s Seafood (our absolute fav spot in NP), Neighborhood, Salud, Regents Pizza, and obviously In & Out (all our friends are east coasters so this is a must). Some touristy things we like to do are go see sunset cliffs and the sea lions in La Jolla. I also love taking my friends to the Hillcrest farmers market on Sundays!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My fiance Phil deserves the biggest shoutout- he has always been Bake & Bacon’s (my blog) #1 fan. His unwavering support from the beginning has allowed me to chase my dreams and without him, I wouldn’t be where I am right now. Starting a business can be super challenging, so having someone in your corner through it makes all the difference.
I also have two great friends who own small businesses; without them to be my sounding board on all things business, I would be so lost! So major shout out to Lindsay and Gabby!!
