We had the good fortune of connecting with Griffen Bradds and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Griffen, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
CrossFit Rebuild was born out of inspiration. I discovered CrossFit in 2017 and it is still a huge part of my life today. With a background in nursing, I’ve seen the importance of functional fitness first hand, and understand how it improves health & wellness, our ability to move and enjoy life, prevent injury & illness, and overall improve Quality of Life. The CrossFit methodology prides itself in preparing participants for the knowns and unknowns life will throw your way. On November 19th, 2021, the unknown came my way.
On that day, I was involved in a very serious accident. I was hit by a car while walking home. It was during my recovery I was able to retrace what happened and see very exact moments in that accident where my training in the gym very likely saved my life. It was also during recovery that I was able to connect specific Functional movements practiced in the gym and how those movements were ensuring I could still navigate this world while recovering from such a serious accident.
Going through this life event there was one thought I couldn’t escape. I needed to create an environment to teach others how they too can leverage Functional Fitness to improve Health, Wellness, and Quality of Life. It became important to me to show people a way to maintain an active lifestyle, be able to play & keep up with their kids/grandkids, be physically mobile enough to travel and/or enjoy everyday life events, and to train for this life in a supportive, fun community environment.
We look forward to helping you on your life journey towards Health, Wellness, and improved Quality of Life.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I recently posted on social media, “What Makes CrossFit Rebuild Different”. At a high level, it is:
1. Founded by a former Critical Care Nurse
2. Exists to teach others preventative healthcare habits and to prepare you for the knowns & unknowns life throws your way
3. Focus on the Mind, Body, Spirit (entire person)
Many gyms will say these things, but I’ve found few really grasp them. You simply are not able to replicate nursing & healthcare experiences unless you’ve gone through them. As a floor nurse, I was seeing young people, under 50, get admitted to the hospital one step from the ICU. This sent me on a journey to find out how I could prevent this from happening in my life, and after years of searching, I knew I had found the answer when I discovered CrossFit (Functional Fitness). The movements worked on in the gym directly apply to how we move through life. Anytime I’m doing a movement I don’t like, or isn’t fun, I am able to tell myself how this will help me in life, and how this will help me on my health & wellness journey. While I’ve never heard these discussions within gyms myself, they will be frequent discussions within CrossFit Rebuild.
We’ve also developed a nutrition program to help members develop a healthy relationship with food, and coach in a manner that leads to life long habits being developed. While we do believe abs are made in the kitchen, we don’t believe meal plans, or strict nutrition plans work for the bulk of the population.
Finally, CrossFit Rebuild is designed for those who are beginners, those who may be new to functional fitness, those who have been away from the gym for a while, and those who have tried 10’s to 100’s of different plans (both fitness & nutrition), but haven’t yet found anything that sticks. Many CrossFit gyms focus on competitions, and I’ve heard in the community that many new members feel left behind at these gyms if they don’t have the desire to be a competitor. Our members are everyday folks looking to improve their health & wellness in a fun, supportive community. Many have heard of “Couch to 5K”, we are more “Couch to CrossFit” in our member base.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am very partial to my town of Encinitas, and we would spend the bulk of our time there. I truly love my community and become excited to show others. We would visit the many restaurants, ice cream/gelato shops, the meditation garden, and of course the beaches! We would likely also head down to the dog beach in Del Mar to let our 3 pups run around.
Finally, I would make sure I introduced my friend to fish tacos, and the variety of good Mexican Food locations we have around town.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my Shoutout to my wife, Dara Bradds. She too, was involved in the same accident as myself and has been incredibly supportive of this journey I am on/building.
