We had the good fortune of connecting with Gibran Mims and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gibran, what makes you happy? Why?
This is a question I’ve had to ask myself before and I think it’s something that we should all ask ourselves. At times I definitely have caught myself being so focused on “making it” to a place where I think I will be happy…Whether that’s from money, or recognition, or material things, or whatever “making it” means for me at that point of time…But over the last year, throughout this pandemic I’ve had a lot more time to focus internally on what truly brings me joy. I’ve realized that what really makes me happy is working hard at something and seeing the hard work pay off over time. It’s such a fulfilling feeling for me. But what also makes me happy is the very simple life moments, spending time with people I love where everyone is present, I just try to appreciate those moments for what they are.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am the creator and host of a YouTube Podcast Series called Speak Your Mind. I host a series of conversations focusing on meaningful topics around race, politics, life, and culture from the perspective of my generation, Gen-Z. I’m really proud of Episode 11 where I spoke with 5 Black student body presidents from colleges across the nation (Yale, Howard, UCLA, MIT, SDSU). It was so dope to have 5 young leaders of color from our generation in one conversation talking about their unique experiences and perspectives. Black Excellence for sure!

I am also really proud of the work I am doing with this school district up in northern California (Marin County), where I am hosting a 4-Part podcast series with high school students talking about race and equity within their school communities. The perspectives of upcoming generation matters so much and I feel so happy to be shedding light and amplifying voices of those who are often underrepresented.

I post weekly “Community Questions” on my Instagram, @thespeakyourmindpodcast. There’s some amazing comments and responses every week so if you are interested go check it out! I’ll be sure to hit you back!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite spot to spend time these days is Civita Park. It’s over in Mission Valley close to where I live. A lot of people don’t know about it, but you gotta check it out! I also love visiting Coronado Island so I’d work that into the itinerary. In terms of food, I’d have to say Dave’s Chicken in Pacific Beach is real fireeeee! I had it for the first time a few weeks ago and it went crazy….Also for some good fish tacos, Oscar’s Mexican Seafood in Hillcrest is a must. But I can’t lie my go-to restruant these days is Cava.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d have to say my friend C.J. Holt… He 100% deserves credit for the work I’ve been able to do with my YouTube podcast series, he’s encouraged me so much. There was a time where I wasn’t really sure if developing :Speak Your Mind” was something I really wanted to take that seriously and C.J. would constantly be telling me like, “Just try it out. Give it 6 months of really focusing on it and see where it might lead you.” So he honestly believed in me before I believed in myself. I feel super blessed to have friends in my life who are just as happy as me to see me succeed.
