We had the good fortune of connecting with Bahar Atilgan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bahar, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
Confidence is not “they will like me”. Confidence is “I’ll be fine if they don’t”. This quote is exactly what FOURGUNSDOWN stands for. It means to not give a fuck about what others think. It means to be true to yourself and do what ever it is that makes YOU happy and to not worry about anything else that will get in the way of it.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
FOURGUNSDOWN is an online boutique that is broken down into 3 categories: Boutique – super dope (usually always all black) clothing that I source mainly from LA. FUCK – apparel/accessories/jewelry all based around the word FUCK. It’s for you to not give a fuck about what others think and to live your life for YOU. What I love about the word is that you can relate to it however you see fit. CUSTOM – I personally customize shoes/bags/jewelry/jackets with my handwriting. You can choose ANYTHING you want! I’ve had people customize a piece with their favorite verse to a song, or their dogs name, or my favorite yet – “show me your butthole”. Yes, you read that right. I can’t make this shit up. FOURGUNSDOWN encourages you to be unapologetically you. It hasn’t been an easy road to get here (but what business has?!). My motto for my personal life and business is “Fuck What They Think”. It’s what has gotten me through my lows of feeling like a failure or feeling like I’m not capable of being a business owner. It reminds me that I’m a badass and the only thing that matters is to follow my heart, do what feeds my soul, and to stay true to my passion. We have to have our little reminder to help us stay on track and to continue to follow our dreams even when things feel like they aren’t in our favor. Everything happens for a reason and when we feel like shits gone south – there’s a lesson to be learned from it and it’ll be that problem/hiccup/rough patch that helps us move forward and not repeat the same “mistake” twice. I say “mistake” because I don’t believe in them. Failure is a part of the process and those failures are what help us grow and help navigate better the next time life bitch slaps us in the face. We gots this!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
OOOH that’s tough! But we’ll start with breakfast at Snooze. The best breakfast burrito I’ve ever had. Then drinks near the water somewhere. JRDN in Pacific Beach has a killer Mezcal drink called Naked & Famous. YUM. Dinner on a rooftop – Lumi Downtown has great vibes and music. Gotta hit up Coinop in North Park – drinks AND games? Yes – take me back to being a kid in a heartbeat. Basic downtown has the best pizza hands down and that’s a lot coming from a pizza connoisseur. San Diego is such a great place to visit (or live!) because no matter where you go you’re bound to meet great people and eat some amazing food and enjoy some delicious cocktails.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My tribe of people throughout the years that always knew I was capable of accomplishing anything I put my mind to and reminded me of what a badass I am even when I didn’t feel like that was the case. Without them I would’ve gotten lost on this crazy journey. As far as books – The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer is the book that helped me get a grip of what life is and what I’m capable of.
