We had the good fortune of connecting with Flair Shay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Flair, what do you want people to remember about you?
I want my legacy to be someone who defined the odds. I beat a rare form of fibro sarcoma cancer twice, beat having to amputate, learned to walk again and never losing who I genuinely was. I stayed focused and determined. I want to be remembered as a dependable, humble, hard-working person who truly cares for others.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Our business started with me playing around with a umbrella after beating cancer two times and I decided to put myself on a umbrella and my son on another. My son said “Mom, you’re so bougie”. Long story short he took his umbrella to school and it was a hit with students. I ended up getting plenty of orders and that’s how The Bougie Brella started. We have to be careful with copyright infringements but I allow for my customers to have freedom of speech and expression on our umbrellas. My customers self advertise their business or images on our products. We are practically unheard of. I’m excited because our umbrellas get a lot of attention when people see phrases, logos or pictures on our umbrellas. I love hearing the excitement of satisfactory or approval. We have had a few bumps in the road like any other business but we learn and keep going. We are hopeful to expand our business to get licensing for sports teams, musician’s and clothing.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hopefully my friend likes seafood because we are headed Downtown to the embarcadero The Fish Market. Then we will go to Eddie V’s piano bar for conversations and drinks. Then we will head over to the gas lamp for clubs and bars. We will visit old town for authentic mexican food and margaritas then a stroll through Presidio Park. La Jolla and Sunset Cliffs for sunset and selfies. Humphreys concert and brunch. Shelter Island for pictures of San Diego’ s Beautiful skyline. Since we’re on Shelter Island may as well go to C-Level for dinner on the water with breath taking views and ambiance. After all the eating and drinking I think we will take a hike up Cowles Mountain and more views and selfies. Lastly relax on Coronado beach and a ferry ride.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out my community of South East San Diego. This area has blossomed so much talent, and small businesses, Let’s continue to plant seeds, grow and remain focused on the grind.
