We had the good fortune of connecting with Felix Semper and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Felix, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think risk is essential in growth. I would not have been able to do what I do if I wouldn’t have taken a risk to create the stretchable paper sculptures, the technique was developed with trial and error until I found the right formula to make this art form possible.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I got to where I am today by taking chances and working hard, experimenting with different materials and finally creating a new form of art that is made from paper that people had never seen before. It was not easy because anytime you go outside the established norms you have to use your vision and believe in your self to create something unique. I have learned that failure is ultimately in your mind, your may be temporarily defeated in a creation but by being persistent and not giving up I have been able to make my vision come true and always tweaking and making my designs better, learning and winning everyday. My art is inspired by fine art, animation, pop art, and everyday objects that I encounter. I create my sculptures from sheets of paper glued together to create a solid looking block, then I carve, shape, sand and finally paint the exterior, as I lift the sculpture from head the bust seems to come to life as it moves and captivates the viewer as he or she is mesmerized and can’t believe by what they’re seeing that this once solid looking sculpture is now as fluid as a leaf in the wind. I want everyone to know that my art is always evolving and growing, changing, improving and I am always looking for new ways to express myself and my vision thru art.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Great food, entertainment and atmosphere is important and a place that combines all three is definitely high on my list, I am always on the lookout for these.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
For years now I have read motivational books and listen to many positive thinkers such as Tony Robbins and others which where life changers to say the least but if I where to pinpoint one person that really motivated me from an artistic and business point of view it has to be Walt Disney. He inspired me with his unlimited creativity, perfectionism, leadership qualities, imagination, and his relentless drive not to give up.
