We had the good fortune of connecting with Ava Johanna and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ava, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After working at the San Diego Reader for 2 1/2 years as the digital marketing manager, I had spent countless hours running social media campaigns for companies around San Diego, including car audio shops, dentists and lawyers. I’m sure it comes at no surprise, but the work was mind-numbing because I had no interest in any of those topics, but I was good at it! At the same time, I started learning more about yoga, meditation, and wellness and found that so many teachers, coaches, and healers had big hearts but no business expertise at all. I knew that I wanted to use my skills in marketing combined with my passion for wellness to empower entrepreneurs in the wellness industry so I dove headfirst into coaching. Since then, I’ve worked with dozens of women in wellness, teaching them how to show up online, how to scale their business and how to make an impact…and an income!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a spiritual business coach, focusing on marrying the strategy with the soul of why we share the work that we do. I work primarily with women in the wellness space and support them in stepping into their next level of income and impact using the online space. While most preach the hustle mentality, I empower my clients to hone in on their unique style of work, their energy and acting out of alignment so they can actually do less and achieve more. We use tools like meditation and breathwork to experience massive emotional and mental breakthroughs, rewire their relationship to money and success, and develop a deep connection to their intuition so they are in a constant state of co-creation and support. It wasn’t always like this though – I was the woman that hustled from 7a-7p building other people’s visions. I was burnt out, disconnected, and lacked any connection to my work. I knew all about the strategy from my years in marketing, but I had no idea why I was building my own business – it lacked the SOUL. Over countless failed launches, charging way less than my work was worth, and feeling like I was in a rinse and repeat cycle that I couldn’t escape, I hired a coach to support me in accessing more creativity, intuition and get to the root of my passion and purpose. From that point forward, my business took off and within weeks I had my first six-figure month. This entire process highlighted how important it is to be excited, aligned and hold the vision of what you are creating and sharing with the world. We can follow a million different road maps, free webinars, or stategies that others have put together, but if we aren’t deeply fueled by our work, we won’t reach the success that we are envisioning for ourselves.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Start the morning with a yoga class at Reunify Yoga in Ocean Beach and stick our toes in the sand at Dog Beach afterward. Go to Newbreak for breakfast and coffee then head to Balboa Park for time outside in the sun. In the afternoon, go downtown for cocktails on the rooftop at the Pendry and enjoy dinner at Nobu in the evening! I call this my ballin’ on the weekend itinerary 🙂
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I was SO scared to invest in myself, but I knew after hitting countless walls that I needed support to get to that next level. I owe my growth over the past year to my mentor and coach, Amanda Marit, who has expanded my belief of what’s possible, what I’m capable of and how to do business a better (and more fun) way!
