We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily & Ryan Burhop and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily & Ryan, what do you attribute your success to?
We launched our wedding photography business, Emry Photography in San Diego in 2015 and couldn’t have imagined it taking off so rapidly. It’s been a wild and amazing ride the last few years. We never tire of photographing hundreds of weddings in San Diego, across California and the U.S and we feel so blessed the business has grown so quickly. We truly believe Emry’s success is due to the way we treat our couples. Both Ryan and I (Emily, the owners) and our team of wedding photographers and videographers place an emphasis on the way we show up to serve our couples. Crafting beautiful images that will become a piece of a couples visual legacy is only half of it. For us, having a servants heart is paramount. We thrive at giving our couples a heartfelt and flawless experience from beginning to end. Despite photographing dozens of weddings a year we are able to keep close ties with our couples and like to help them throughout the entire wedding planning process. We are there for our couples in any capacity we can be, from a friendly calming presence to a resource during the nitty gritty of planning. We want our couples to be able to sit back, fully enjoy the day & live in the moment. We accomplish this by keeping in contact throughout the wedding planning process to build the trust that the photos are covered as well as making sure they have everything they need. Champagne refill? We’re on it. Need a moment to yourself? We will clear the room. We are there to give so much more than photographs. We want to give a memorable experience.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We are always looking to capture images that will stand the test of time. The raw emotions, the moments in between, encapsulating those unrepeatable moments. Our hearts beat a little faster when we capture that look, gesture, laughter or tear that will chronicle a couples love story for generations to come. After photographing hundreds of celebrations we have been able to lean into our intuition on the wedding day knowing when to be a quiet observer and when to give guidance. Striking that balance took time but has made such a difference in the way we approach documenting a wedding. One thing that definitely sets us apart in this industry besides our work and who we are as humans would be that we offer unlimited event coverage on the wedding day. We don’t want our couples to ever stress about our photography timeline and moments being missed because they have to sacrifice coverage at the beginning of the day or end of the night. We like to be there to record all of those meaningful moments. For us, crafting the visual narrative of the day is everything. We also get our couples their photographs in three weeks or less. We remember how it was being excited newlyweds and not receiving the photos for months after the event. We are so proud of the business we have built. Mostly the incredibly humbling and sweet things our couples detail in their reviews of us. Reading those testimonials makes everything worth it. We currently have over one hundred five star reviews on the knot and each new one that comes in is just as exciting as the first. We also just finished a complete overhaul of our website, it was our first time to have a completely custom website created by Julia at Luminous Lines and it has been incredibly exciting to see it come to life. It is definitely something we are proud to put out there to the world and it feels like us at last. To get where we are today wasn’t necessarily an easy road and definitely came with its own unique set of challenges. It’s very easy to say “I love this so much and it’s what I want to do with my life” but it’s another to go about making that a business that can sustain you and your family if you have one. For us, it hasn’t been solely about goal setting. Goal setting is great but more than that it’s been about putting systems in place to reach those goals. It’s about tweaking, refining and getting a little better everyday rather than this thunderclap moment of transformation. It’s not about overnight success and if you’re looking for that we are sorry to say you will most likely feel let down. It’s every little action that you take daily that adds up to a sustainable lifelong career. If it’s what you really want you really have to not give up on it, there is an ebb and flow and some years will be busier than others but you have to just keep pushing through it. The ultimate gift is when you get your business to a point that you are able to choose the projects that really inspire you rather than taking anything that comes your way just to get by. That alone is worth all the nights burning the midnight oil, all the seasons of scarcity, it’s worth all of it. Our brand was born out of love. As a husband and wife team a love for each other, and a love for not just photography but specifically for weddings. We had dabbled in all the genres of photography and then photographed our first wedding and it was game over. We knew this was what we wanted to do. It’s so much more to us than just our livelihood. We all have those days where we take the world around us for granted and we just are kind of floating through and going with the motions and then we have those days where we are truly living. When we photograph a wedding it’s always that feeling of really living. We are filled with gratitude, curiosity and wonder. The fact that these wonderful humans trust us with their story, their vulnerability, their family and friends never loses its luster on us.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would take them to the Shout House in San Diego. We did a staycation downtown last year for our anniversary and we had the best time at the Shout House, they even had us up on stage to dance to our wedding first dance song and it was something we won’t forget. We felt like we were on our very own episode of the Bachelor or Bachelorette ha. We would also have to treat them to some Puesto tacos because they are so good. Whenever we have people in town they can be sure we will be taking them to Puesto for some chicken al pastor tacos and margs of course. Speaking of margaritas, we also really love Juan in San Diego. It’s a tequila bar and if the ambience alone isn’t enough to warrant the visit then the drinks definitely are. You must try the house pistachio milk cocktail. If you’re more of a martini person then 333 Pacific is another spot we love to frequent when we get a date night. The edamame hummus and brussels sprouts are a must. We couldn’t not mention two spots from our hometown of Fallbrook. 127 West Social House and Casa Estrellas are two of the restaurants in our area that we are always bringing out of town guests to. 127 West is actually where we had our after party for our own wedding and they have the best selection of microbrews on tap and a really cozy ambience. Casa Estrellas has delicious margaritas and amazing food we love to go on nights when they have live music, so much fun. Clearly we love food and drinks, haha. As far as entertainment goes, The Belly Up in Solana is such a great venue. It’s so intimate and we love when we can catch a show there. For us we love when we can bring friends and family to the beach and really make a day of it. La Jolla Cove is another spot we feel like every one should check out if they are in La Jolla. If we wanted to give them a little change of scenery taking them up to Julian or Palomar mountain for a nice little hike outdoors and that forest feel is definitely something we love to do. Getting out in nature always gives us a little transfusion of energy and inspiration.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There have been so many helping hands that have propelled us along the way. First and foremost our families, telling your family you’re going to quit a conventional full time job to pursue your dreams doesn’t always go so well. Instead of filling us with fear they’ve cheered us on along the way and we really would have never taken that leap without their support. One thing that makes Emry Photography really unique is that we offer unlimited event coverage. We always want to tell our couples stories in their entirety and never want to be leaving in the middle of the cake cut. Unlimited coverage means a lot of long days and nights so we would be remiss if we didn’t thank Grandma and Grandpa for caring for our little guy. Speaking of our little guy we have to thank our son Jude. He is a constant source of inspiration in our lives. He has instilled a child like curiosity in us as we help him explore his ever expanding world. Its made us better artists, better humans and more aware of the micro moments. All of which we bring back into our wedding work. Moving to San Diego from Chicago and opening our business a few years later we have to thank any industry peer that’s referred us, shared our work or has just been a warm smiling face on a wedding day.
