We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Withouski and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I decided to start my own business it was definitely scary, you have the mindset of “can I actually do this?” and “what if I fail?” I come from a business oriented family, so that gave me the confident boost I needed. I am fortunate enough to have a constant support system, and can get advice from my dad or brother (both business owners) if need be. I would say my life and career moto has always been, “fake it until you make it.” It relates to both going off on your own initially, and the building process of trying to grow your business. You lead with confidence and learn as you go.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In all honesty, being a hairstylist is one of the most rewarding careers out there. I not only get to make someone feel absolutely beautiful, but I get to share major life events with them. I am the ears when they need to vent, or the silence when they need a moment to themselves. I am constantly meeting new faces and sharing their life stories. I am the therapist you never new you needed, or the unbiased opinion you are so desperately seeking for. That is what makes this career so rewarding. To me, it doesn’t feel like work everyday when I get to hear about how “you literally just found out your pregnant…shh no one knows yet!!” or “you just got let go, but haven’t told your spouse yet” Behind the chair, I am not only creating art, but I am creating relationships that last a life time. On the creative side, I get to show up everyday and pour my heart into creating custom cuts and colors to meet ones lifestyle. I get to give them the “big change” they have been looking for. Everyday is different and brings its own challenges and rewards. I personally specialize in lived-in, natural looking color. Living in SoCal, a natural “beachy” look is one of the most desired. Everyone deserves a tailored look just for them, and that is what I strive for in every client that sits in my chair. Having the freedom to be able to create everyday is something I am so proud of.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I grew up in Coronado, and currently live in the San Diego area (homebody, I know) so you would think this would be the easiest question to answer! Its funny, I get this question a lot from my clients who are new to the area. First off, if you have never been to Coronado, it is a must. Take a walk along Orange ave, starting at the bay until you reach the beach. You will find the most amazing restaurants and boutiques along the way. Little Italy is where you want to go for a perfect date night, or girls night out. If you are the college age range than Pacific Beach is your place to party and hang! Some of my go to places are: Balboa Park to people watch, Coronado Central Beach, North Park for its unique boutiques, Little Italy for the food, and Kate Sessions Park to lay and relax.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As mentioned before, coming from a supportive, business oriented family has pushed me to where I am today. A major part of my success comes from my family. A far as hairstyling in general, there are many individuals and organizations I owe a lot of my success too! Ashley Gill was my first mentor right out of beauty school. She was the previous owner of Salon De Ville in Coronado, Ca where I first started my career. Ashely was the one who initially motivated me to get involved in as many classes as possible. She introduced me to the New York TIGI Academy where I attended classes ranging in all things haircuts and color. I then took my career to the next level by moving to a couple different salons and experiencing new techniques from the most talented individuals. I have now set roots in my dream salon, Raven and Sage, located in the heart of North Park. I am surrounded by the most motivating, creative, and personable peers I could have ever imagined. I owe my daily happiness and current success to all my clients and coworkers, past and present.
