We had the good fortune of connecting with Ana Phelps and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ana, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
“Follow the Rules” In traditional Photography and Business there are so many rules you should follow. And in general that should be a good path to go. But some of my best Photographs were taken by breaking the rules. It is said to never shoot against the sun. I love shooting against the sun and making it a Sun Ray in my pieces. This is just one example. Same in running your business, sometimes a rule breaking moment is what will give you a break. I think in the creative world, the ability to create is the ability to imagine something different. Different from the rules.

When I was about 15 my Dad gave me a book about Photography. I did not have a camera but I read the whole “nerdy” book and was on a mission to earn one someday. I finally manage to get one a year later. I grew up in Brazil and film, lenses did not come easy, they were very expensive. This was analog times. Film had 24 or 36 frames. You only had 24 or 36 chances to get that shot in focus on manual mode and exposed perfectly without looking at your histogram. Therefore I learned how to shoot. Photography took me around the corner, around the Country and around the world. Along with surfing. I came to the USA in the 90’s, met my husband surfing. We moved to Maui for a little while to pursue better waves and warmer… Digital time came in and I was skeptical. Took me 5 years to give in. When I did I completely immersed myself in the world of Photoshop and digital pos processing. Today I could not be more thankful for all the evolution that the Photography world went by. My love for the ocean and coastal scenes naturally took me to that area, where I aim mostly to decorate your “Lonely Walls”. My business grew steadily by my persistence and passion for this medium. It is commonly said that when you do what you love from your heart, that is success. My Business is a proof of that.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
