We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexia Heyl & Morgan Wurtzler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexia & Morgan, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Morgan and I have shared a passion for entrepreneurship for as long as we can remember. We both formed an interest for ideation and brand creation through studying marketing and business in college. After graduating, we both ended up back in San Diego (where we grew up together) and reconnected. We were sitting at La Jolla Shores one day talking about our love for the ocean and our shared passion for creating a great product some day. Eventually that conversation turned into an idea and that idea became a reality. We took it step by step and day by day, without putting too much pressure on ourselves and all of the sudden we had a legitimate business.
We both feel a deep connection to the ocean and we’ve found that nothing compares to what it can do for our skin and hair. So, we decided to package those benefits up for people who don’t have easy access to those magical waters.
The idea of starting a business was intimidating at first, but we have a shared desire to something successful and long-lasting. Our mission is to bring joy to folks who use our products, all the while building an inclusive, minimal brand with a positive impact on the environment, while bringing awareness to how important the sea is.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our commitment to our business and our belief in our products sets us apart. We are truly committed to creating the most quality sea scrub out there. Not to mention, the versatility of our Ocean Hair Texturizer and Body Scrub is unique and has been a major selling point for people. There’s not really anything like our product out there. There’s sea salt wave sprays for beachy hair and there’s body scrubs, but there’s not a product that does both, while also utilizing clean and natural ingredients.
Every time we make a batch we get excited all over again. It’s a wonder we don’t keep all the product for ourselves because we love using it so much! We love hearing feedback from people – all of Morgan’s roommates use the Scrub now and my husband, who barely uses any product, is a huge fan as well.
There’s a lot of fear and uncertainty that has come with starting a business, but taking it day by day has helped us stay focused. We really took our time with market research which has really paid off for us so far. We hope our brand story so far is an inspiration – if we can do this it’s really possible for anyone to turn their passion into a product and share it with the world.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Our week-long tour of San Diego would include morning coffee runs to OB Beans in Ocean Beach and Bird Rock Coffee, hikes by the water in Torrey Pines, and trips to the beach, of course! There are so many amazing beach towns in San Diego – Ocean Beach, La Jolla, and Solana Beach are our go-tos. Our evenings would include a variety of delicious Mexican food and trips to all of our favorite bars and breweries, including The Holding Company, Kettner Exchange, and Coronado Brewing Company. Also, we would 100% hit up a Padres game!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Our friends and families have been extremely supportive since the conception of Of The Sea. They’ve never questioned our ability to make this happen, and they’ve supported all of our ideas. The people closest to us are incredibly honest, so to see them get just as excited about what we’ve created as we are has validated this process for us.
