We had the good fortune of connecting with Aleka C. Thrash and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aleka C., we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My purpose is to inspire individuals to live authentically! One of the ways I live out my purpose is through Wrapped by A.C.T. and headwrap and accessory line. The vision came as an expression of Naturally A.C.T. through fabrics and headdresses. Our headdress and accessories are designed to empower those who choose to adorn themselves with a sense of pride and provides an outlet for creativity. With a limited-edition approach, each head-wrap will be released in no more than 10 of each design in stock. A unique option you’ll find is the satin lining to protect the hair from friction. In addition to pre-recorded how-to videos, we offer a one-one online session for an additional fee.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The beginning of my entrepreneurial journey was very difficult. I struggled with self-doubt, sometimes I still do. I knew I had good ideas yet felt that no one cared. After I hosted my first workshop and people actually showed up, I realized what I had to offer people not just wanted but they needed. My journey to self-confidence and entrepreneurship has been a challenge. I have stopped and started more times then I would like to admit. I have learned the importance of having people around you who will remind you of your why even if they don’t understand. Yes, there are many things you can do on your own however, you will soar when you have the right people in your corner. Moving forward I am determined to be consistent. I have seen the rewards of consistency and not giving up, it’s worth it to get up and try again after you have been knocked down. My advice for others – DO NOT QUIT! If you need to pivot, pivot just does not quit. In 2019 Wrapped by A.C.T. was birthed. Wrapped by A.C.T. is the expression of Naturally A.C.T. through fabrics and headdresses. The head-wrap line empowers those who choose to adorn themselves with a sense of pride and provides an outlet for creativity. Many women want to wear headwraps as a fashion statement yet don’t know how to tie them. Wrapped by A.C.T offers a variety of satin lined headwraps with how-to tips and tricks to keep you looking fabulous. When people wear a headdress from Wrapped By A.C.T. I want them to have quality fabric, experience community, and be crowned with dignity.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am all about community and supporting locally owned businesses. If my best friend was visiting we would dine at different restaurants every day including lunch at Irie Kitchen, Daddy Pete’s BBQ, and dinner at Forty Acres Soul Kitchen, Chez Olga, GoJo Ethiopian Cuisine. Drinks at Creston Brewery. Snacks from Malamiah Juice Bar, Mosby’s Popcorn, and Daddy’s Dough Cookies. We would also check out some good art and entertainment at Muse GR, by the way, this is also a wonderful Airbnb location. Next up paint and sip with Edge2Edge Paintings, LLC and or E’lla’s Art Gallery LLC. Then pick up a few books from We Are Lit. Get in a little retail therapy at Nourish Your Curls Boutique and Smell Goods Cafe. End the week with some self-care at Polished Nail Bar and Apsara Spa.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have learned to be a master multi-tasker. What sets me apart is knowing I can’t do it alone. In addition to an amazing family, friends, and the best customers, Corinthia E. Croom serves as the creative director with ACTPhotoMedia and challenges me to try new ideas. While Connie’s Fig Leaf Shop serves as the lead seamstress for Wrapped By A.C.T. My mom and brother are my greatest supporters, source of encouragement, and motivation. Additionally, I look to Courtney Adeleye as an indirect source of mentorship as the CEO and founder of The Mane Choice, she also owns many other brands. Courtney has influenced and inspired me to always believe in myself even when I seem to fail or not be good enough. She and my mom are reminders that I must never give up. I must be willing to keep trying new ways to meet my goals and achieve my dreams.
