We had the good fortune of connecting with Ben Harvey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ben, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
Spending time and staying engaged. While I am guilty of being distracted and looking at my phone I do my best to focus my attention on my daughter when I am around her. I am lucky to have a flexible schedule and plenty of time away from work to spend time with my daughter. We don’t watch TV instead we ride bikes, read books, play games, dance, do acrobatics etc. By doing activities together we talk constantly which both strengthens our relationship and gives me a chance to teach her the things I know. Kids are amazing if you pay attention!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The thing that I am most proud of right now is my team. From our warehouse and delivery people to our sales and customer service department we have the most amazing group of people. Not only are they effective at getting the job done but they constantly wow our customers. When I started the company I had not choice but to be involved in every transaction and element of the business. Then as we grew I made the mistake of still trying to be the point person for most things partly because I wasn’t ready to turn over the reigns, but mostly that I didn’t trust my team. So I would say that one of the key’s to our success has been attracting and retaining great people and for me to get out of their way and let them step up where they are strongest. This plays in to our brand as well. We have always had a casual, sales free culture and don’t take ourselves too seriously. Its just patio furniture after all! Our job is to educate our customers on the products we sell while giving them a comfortable and fun shopping experience.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For family friendly activities I love to spend time with friends at Windansea Beach, have bonfires on the bay, visit Mt Laguna and hike Annie’s Canyon Trail. And Assuming COVID-19 didn’t exist I would love to go to the Children’s Museum, Lego land and Balboa park. For food I am excited to go back to the Grand Ole BBQ in Flinn Springs, Little Italy Food Hall, Azuki Sushi, Buona Forchetta. San Diego has so much to offer… its breaking my heart to even think about this question right now with the pandemic happening.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife Erin! Because she is smarter and with far better taste in furniture than I have I can always count on her for advise when I am feeling stuck or unsure about business and design decision. She comes from a corporate background that I have never experienced and thus has insights in to how things should be done. She also ads stability to our family since she runs her own consulting business which takes some of the pressure off me running a small business.
