We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Cathleen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, what’s your startup story? How did you start your business?
I started off doing make-up in Hollywood over 20 years ago, it’s my first love. I decided to do eyelash extensions because as a make-up artist I fell in love with the eyes. I love the colors in the eyes, the spirit behind the eyes, the way make -up and lashes shape the eyes and that transforms the face. . When eyelash extensions came out I was thrilled. I went to a training In 2004 and that when it all began. I did them in a salon for a little bit and stopped because the product was difficult to work with. In 2016 I looked into to eyelash extensions again and saw the products evolved into the visions I had back in 2004. I went to a training in 2016 and had big visions on what I wanted my business to look like and who my target Clientele was. I called my friends first and had them be my test models. I offered them lashes and went from there, so thankful for my friends for allowing me to experiment on them! LOL! I was doing them out of my kitchen and making house calls in the beginning. Through word of mouth and social media marketing, I went from 2 clients to 20, then 40 a week. I quit my day job and jumped right in. I learned how to run a small business just by stepping out. It went from me wanting to make some extra money from home, to a solid Income. When I took it seriously and realized I could make a good living doing lashes is when My business took off. I continue to take training and learn new ways to give my clients the looks of their dreams
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One of the most important lessons I learned is do not compare your work to other artist. There is a market for everyone and not everyone is going to want the style of your work. Sometimes I see stylist can be competitive and there is no reason for it. Focus on making your work the best you can do in your own way and cheer your peers on. Also, working with the public you will get people from all walks life as clients. Keep your personal, political, Life opinions to your self If it’s conflicting with your client. You are providing a service to the public and give people permission to be themselves. Do not gossip about clients and their personal lives. You are a trusted person in their lives, honor it and be respectful.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I LOVE the outdoor activities of the San Diego. I love the parks, hiking and most of all the beaches. Summer time is clearly the best time of the year in San Diego. boating on the bay is my favorite thing to do. My favorite view of the city is from Costerra with a margarita in hand. The view from the restaurant of the city lights is magnificent.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shout out goes to my faith in God. I wouldn’t be where I am today with out Faith, prayer with authority, mental strength and action. I had no one to look up to in the lash business Because it was so new when I started. No person helped me help me achieve my goals, I had to do it all on my own and lean into God.
Other: I keep my contact information a little restricted because my books are so full
