We had the good fortune of connecting with Carly Zuffinetti and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carly, so let’s start with how you started?
When I got the idea for my brand and blog, “The Preggers Pantry”, I wasn’t worried about failing because I had no where to go but up. I just went for it. I knew my content was good so I didn’t focus on everything having to look perfect right away, I just STARTED. I wanted to create a resource for mothers who were concerned about health and wellness during pregnancy and beyond. I started out by creating an Instagram page and blog on my own. Then I reached out to companies that would potentially be interested in working together and other bloggers for advice and guidance. A very important factor for me was making these connections early on. I had a good friend, Lauryn Evarts, who had an amazing blog so I picked her brain and she featured me and helped me a lot. I also wasn’t afraid to reach out to other moms and share my products with them, which helped spread the word. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and put yourself out there. I’ve met so many amazing people this way. When I started my skin care line, I started with one product and added 3 more over time. When I started I made everything by hand, I even had handwritten paper labels and homemade business cards-I just wanted to get the product out there. I love the saying, “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good”. If you’re working on something and you don’t stay in the present, you can get stuck worrying about what could go wrong or thinking about the end game and you might never get anything accomplished. The most important tips I could give to someone who is trying to build a brand would be to make connections with others, be consistent, stay true to you, stay in the present and be clear to your audience about who you are and what you stand for.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Building a business is never an easy road and there are challenges every step of the way. I spread the word about my products through my social media outlets and also started selling at small shop events like the Mom Made Market. From building an Etsy shop to getting my products into stores, to learning about creating an LLC, there is always something to learn. I am always thinking about what is coming next, which is a personal challenge because I’m trying to allow myself to live in the moment more and enjoy the now. I have had to learn to set aside time to think about business and work on projects so that it doesn’t interfere with my family time. I am extremely proud of the skincare products I created and stand behind them one hundred percent. I do everything from bottling to shipping from my home. Next up-writing a book!
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
We are beach people, our favorites are Del Mar or Seaside in Cardiff. If we are in Del Mar we like to hit up Sbicca or Jake’s for dinner and if Cardiff we love Fish 101 and Good On Ya. Other restaurants we love are Herb and Sea in Encinitas and Campfire in Carlsbad.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I mentioned her in my story, but Lauryn Evarts Bosstick of The Skinny Confidential Blog. She encouraged me to start my blog/business when I initially shared my idea with her and has been there for me through it all.
