We had the good fortune of connecting with Abraham Musto and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Abraham, what’s your definition for success?
I absolutely struggle with recognizing success! One of my favorite comedians said this phrase on his podcast, “The winners circle is for losers that have never experienced success.” That is not something that resonates with me, but it did make me think. When I experience success I rarely want to stay in it and celebrate, because I would rather move on to the next thing. I think success is having the ability to stop and look around when you have accomplished a milestone. According to what I believe success is, I don’t believe I have ever had success. Maybe this coming year!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
This is always the most challenging part of interviews or even talking to people about the art style I do. I Create bootleg/Alternative Toys. These are random toys or action figures that I have thought up from scratch, repacked with an art background, or even taken pieces from random figures and molded them together. One of the things that I believe sets me apart from other people in this arena of art is my ability to take on hard to swallow topics. I have done figures based on how people are destroying the planet, white privilege, racism, and more. Art has always been a passion of mine, but I am most excited about this outlet of creating because it is still relatively new. I have been able to make a name for myself quickly in the short amount of time that I have been creating alternative toys. One of the most important things I have learned along the way is that you really shouldn’t care about what anyones else thinks about your art style. Every one has an opinion about what you’re doing, but the truth is that it doesn’t matter. This is an art style that is in the early stages and is going to start exploding…Get Ready World!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in San Diego, so this is basically unfair for anyone else to read this! We would start the week off right by having brunch at Breakfast Republic followed by a quick hike up Cowles Mountain! Because I am such a donut and coffee junkie the week would be filled with lots of visits. Through the week we would grab donuts from Nomad Donuts, Sidecar Donuts, and Donut Bar. We would then grab coffee from one of my favorite coffee shops in San Diego. This list is extensive, but the musts are Modern Times Invigatorium, Public Square, Scrimshaw, and Dark Horse. The Friend visiting is no doubt from a place with no beach so we would need to hike down the Ho Chi Minh trail to Blacks Beach (the non-nudist side), take a drive out to Coronado, and visit the La Jolla Cove. We may go to some of the other small lesser known beaches in La Jolla like horseshoe. Night life in San Diego is the absolute best so this is where we would get extremely busy. Throughout the week we would hit different breweries, The Rabbit Hole, and Vin De Syrah. Following drinks we would have to go to Throw It in down town to throw some axes. If during early summer another good way to finish off the night is a rooftop movie on the Hyatt in Downtown. The week would be so full!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The person that most deserves recognition in my story is my best friend Adam Wooddy. He is the sole reason that I decided to pursue making bootleg action figures and toy art.
