We asked some of the city’s leading artists and creatives to tell us about how they decided to pursue an artistic or creative career. We’ve shared some highlights below.

Gaby Hendry | Photographer

Whether it was stealing my mom’s phone when I was 10 or carrying around a little point and shoot camera in 6th grade, I’ve always loved the idea of capturing a photo. In high school I got my first DSLR camera and I got to learn under Nat Warr Photography what it looks like to make photography a career. After high school, I then decided to pursue a career in photography. I really believe it’s something special to be able to creatively capture a moment through a photo and getting to give that to people brings me joy! Read more>>

Matthew Phillips | Recording Artist

It has always been my dream to play music. I believe it is my calling and purpose. When I am on stage it is the closest thing I can get to heaven on earth. Nothing else matters. It’s an experience like no other and I feel absolute peace. Music moves me in such a powerful way. Being an artist enables me to share what I experience and put it down in a tangible form. If I able to create a piece of music that moves ones soul, I have accomplished my purpose. Read more>>

Laura Bueno | Singing & Dancing Baker

I have been influenced throughout my life by my family. My grandmother was an opera singer in the 1930’s before having a family and that has been a huge inspiration for me. As a young child, my mother and aunt would sing all the time and once I was old enough, I would sing with them. This led me to pursue a career in the fine arts as a singer earning my Bachelors degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. I have performed extensively with San Diego Opera, Lyric Opera San Diego, San Diego Musical Theater, and many other regional companies. This also led me to start Playground Players Productions, a youth musical theater company that offers private voice lessons, piano lessons, and fully-staged musicals. I’ve also recently taken over Edudance-Classrooms in Motion, a ballroom dance company that teaches children in schools around the county. In addition to singing and dancing, I began turning my love of baking into a business by starting Lollypop’s Bake Shoppe. Read more>>

Zachary Brown | Chef & Leatherworker

I grew up in a creative family and was exposed to a lot of art and creativity from an early age. At twelve years old, I made the decision to be a chef, and that singular goal shaped my decision making throughout the rest of my adolescence, and it drove me into any food service job where I could get my foot in the door. I’ve always had a vocational aptitude, and the idea of working in an office has never appealed to me. Being creative gives me such satisfaction, and being able to make things for people that bring them joy keeps me going. Read more>>
