We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, why did you pursue a creative career?
It has always been my dream to play music. I believe it is my calling and purpose. When I am on stage it is the closest thing I can get to heaven on earth. Nothing else matters. Its a experience like no other and I feel absolute peace. Music moves me in such a powerful way. Being an artist enables me to share what I experience and put it down in a tangible form. If I able to create a piece of music that moves ones soul, I have accomplished my purpose.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I really just love to play music. Its always been my passion and to get recognition doing what I love is just a dream come true. I believe my live show is what sets us apart from other acts. We take weeks and months prepping our live shows. The sounds we use are all handpicked and designed to move your spirit. The visuals are created to tell a story but left open for the audience to create their own. I am most proud of the emotion and vulnerability of people after the shows. Being able to share/create a moment with someone that will last a lifetime. Persistence is everything. I never gave up. I pushed until something moved. The music industry is one of the hardest businesses in the world. Keeping your head up when everyone is telling you no is extremely difficult. Ive always followed the concept that the only time you truly fail is once you give up. Persistence.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Rarefied recording has got to be my favorite place to be in all of San Diego. Its my favorite studio and its even better when your with friends creating music.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people that have been fundamental in making my journey possible. Charles Phillips, Marilyn Phillips, Dusty Lane, Ralph Frengel, Adam Graham, Merissa Cooper, Chris Ruel, Christopher Leyva, Elfego Becerra, Noah Gilman, Jerrell Ayran, Joel Piper, and so many more. Each individual named I could write and entire page about. There is no way I would make the deadline for this article.
