We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Bueno and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have been influenced throughout my life by my family. My grandmother was an opera singer in the 1930’s before having a family and that has been a huge inspiration for me. As a young child, my mother and aunt would sing all the time and once I was old enough, I would sing with them. This led me to pursue a career in the fine arts as a singer earning my Bachelors degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. I have performed extensively with San Diego Opera, Lyric Opera San Diego, San Diego Musical Theater, and many other regional companies. This also led me to start Playground Players Productions, a youth musical theater company that offers private voice lessons, piano lessons, and fully-staged musicals. I’ve also recently taken over Edudance-Classrooms in Motion, a ballroom dance company that teaches children in schools around the county. In addition to singing and dancing, I began turning my love of baking into a business by starting Lollypop’s Bake Shoppe. I make custom cookies, cakes, and other treats for all events and I love being able to flex my creative muscles through desserts. Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am grateful that I can provide a living for my family through doing what I love. Baking, singing, and dancing have been the things I go to when I’m feeling happy, sad, anxious, etc. It’s a wonderful thing to never have to “work” a day in your life! I love what I do! At this time, with the state of the world, I’m grateful that I have been able to expand my bakery business and really hone my techniques! There are a lot of challenges, but through those challenges, we are able to learn and grow and come out better on the other side.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take guests to the beach! We love Hodad’s as a must-eat place. Balboa Park is always beautiful and a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shout out to my family, who have always been supportive of my goals and endeavors! Also, to all the incredible artists out there doing what you love, I learn so much through observing you!
