We had the good fortune of connecting with Marc & Darlynne Menkin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marc & Darlynne, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
We truly enjoy using our creative skills to lift others up and bring people to a better place. It’s something we strive to do, both in our personal and professional lives. And thanks to our two companies, Where You Want To Be and Out of the Ordinary, we get to create fun and memorable life experiences through our tours and team building programs. For many people, life can be stressful so if we can use our creative talents in a way that brings joy, we’re all for it. Our mission is pretty simple. Whether you’re on one of our Walking or Biking Tours or perhaps a Team Building activity like a Scavenger Hunt or a Charity Bike Build, our hope is that you’ll say to yourself “I’m exactly Where I Want To Be!

What should our readers know about your business?
Our two companies, Where You Want To Be & Out of the Ordinary, are all about creating unique Team Building Experiences. Marc’s passion for San Diego and natural curiosity were the initial driving forces but as time went on, we quickly realized, we were given a very special gift. For us, the two companies are a true reflection of who we are and what we enjoy doing the most – blessing people with an experience of a life time. Everyone has special talents but for us, we believe our Super Power – and what sets us apart – is that we know how to get people to relax and have FUN! In these uncertain times, it’s not always easy to do as people are stressed. But bringing out the “inner kid” in people is something that comes natural to us, and as a result, we’ve had many memorable experiences. It’s hard to say what we’re most proud of as we’ve been given so many great opportunities but we are especially thankful for our “Corporate Social Responsibility” programs. Whenever we can create an activity where the client is “giving back” and helping others, that’s very special! Thanks to our many generous clients, we’ve been able to donate to countless organizations. One year, we created a Charity Bike Build for a Los Angeles Law Firm. They initially donated 40 bikes but at the end of the program, the CEO was so moved, they ended up donating more than 100 bikes and a $1000 worth of toys to “Toys for Joy.” They also became a sponsor for the event the following year. When that happened, we cried. It was so heartwarming! As for lessons learned along the way? Resiliency is important and believing in yourself because running a business isn’t easy. Always follow through and do what you say you’re going to do. Also, as you’re climbing up the ladder, always remember to help others. Don’t make it all about yourself. Be kind and treat others with respect.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well you have to take one of our tours! The good thing about living in San Diego is that there’s so much to see & do AND you don’t necessarily have to spend a lot of money. Walking and exploring some of San Diego’s cool neighborhoods is one of our favorite treats. In fact, we now have a Travel series called “This Is Our Town” that features all the local hidden gems. Check it out! Some of our favorite neighborhoods include Windansea, Bankers Hill, Burlingame and Point Loma. Within all of those neighborhoods are hidden walking trails, unique shops, amazing restaurants and lovely, historical homes. Our tours actually focus on areas that are “off the beaten path” so we do tend to gravitate to neighborhoods & activities that are different and Out of the Ordinary. You can check out “This Is Our Town” on our YouTube Channel, Where You Want To Be TV.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We are firm believers that we wouldn’t be where we are, if it weren’t for all the support & encouragement we received over the years. As a married couple, our biggest break came in 1990 from Channel 8, when they hired Darlynne as their new Consumer Producer and Newscast writer. At the time, we were living back east so they took a chance on her. That opportunity opened up so many doors for both of us and introduced us to people we otherwise wouldn’t have met. We experienced that same generosity when we started our Team building and Tour business. Right from the beginning, the San Diego Tourism Authority took us under their wings and really showed us how to navigate this new territory. The YMCA also played a key role because that’s where Marc realized he had a natural gift for planning events. One of our passions is helping Military families and thanks to Lincoln Military, we’ve been able to create some very memorable and unique Team Building experiences! We feel very blessed to be able to do what we do, in such a beautiful city and the best part? We get to do it together! Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of our families and dear friends. They’ve been there for us since the beginning.
