We had the good fortune of connecting with Sammy Bel Mar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sammy, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’m not so sure that I chose my artistic career as much as it found its way to me. I’ve always had the music bug in me since I can remember. Growing up with a hairbrush in hand and turning whatever else I could find into a makeshift microphone was my childhood. It was how I expressed myself and learned that music was something I wanted by my side forever. Through the years, I sang in choirs and learned how to play a couple instruments, but It wasn’t until sophomore year of college that I took my own passion for songwriting seriously. I created connections with individuals that shared the same interests and goals as me and I’m a strong believer in the power of environments. My bubble was solely music. Whether it was the business side of the music industry or the artistic side, everyone I had contact with was hellbent to thrive in the world of music and I think that really inspired me to pursue this creative career in my free time.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I like to categorize my music as dream pop with indie alternative roots. I typically like to start the writing process by playing guitar and seeing what flows out of me lyrically. Some days I’ll probably start a bass line or drum track in Ableton Live and then work from there! It’s all about the mood I’m in at that moment. I’m still learning everyday and still get excited about the new things I pick up just by being patient and authentic to myself. I find inspiration in the places that I visit and I’m excited to find my sound as I continue to write more music. I would love listeners to relate to the messages in my lyrics and to find comfort in the musical world that I’m creating with my songs.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Okay this is a fun question! Hmm if live music were to suddenly come back tonight then you can absolutely find my bestie and I eating dinner at House of Blues San Diego followed by a show in the Music Hall underground. The next day we would pack all of our painting tools, good tunes with a bluetooth speaker, and lots and lots of snacks and find a park to throw a little painting picnic sesh! Later in the week, if the weather permits, we’d put on layers of sunscreen to go paddle boarding in Mission Bay or the Carlsbad lagoon and then stuff our faces with fries/donuts afterwards. And then to close out the week we’d end it with a day of thrifting and antique shopping! Whatever we’re doing it’s with good music playing on the way!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have a LOT of thanks to give for all the support and encouragement I’ve received the past four years. My mother is a real dreamer. I get my imagination and childlike/unstoppable attitude from her. She’s a huge catalyst in my continued pursuit of music because she pushes me like no other. My brother is also a big reason why I still produce original music. Without his engineering help in the studio with the final mix/master process of my songs, my music probably wouldn’t be listenable! I also owe a lot of my inspiration and kickstart to my career to the music business organization at SDSU called Aztec Music Group. This collective of talented, determined and creative student artists and business minded go-getters is a strong force to reckon with. My three years with the organization as an active member to eventually becoming the President has taught me that music connects everyone!
