We had the good fortune of connecting with Wes and Nathan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wes and Nathan, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
We are from Poway, CA. Nathan(drummer) played alto saxophone and Wes (singer/guitarist) played trumpet in middle school band together. Having a disciplined musical upbringing through marching band, concert band, and jazz band in school has helped us stay disciplined in songwriting, recording, and performing while holding down full time jobs.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We are two music nerds in this band Thundermaier who are obsessed with songwriting, composition, arrangement, performance, and sound engineering. What sets us apart is we have been playing together for about 14 years now. Not many musicians our age can say this (in our late twenties). It hasn’t been easy – we had to write and record songs through e-mail for almost 3 years when Wes was away at school. We also do all of the recording and sound engineering ourselves and are pretty proud of how far we’ve come. We know we can always write catchier, more fun, dancier songs and are constantly pushing ourselves to become better musicians, writers, and performers.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Ocean Beach, North Park, and Downtown San Diego music scenes are alive and growing. San Diego also has many amazing jazz and classical musicians. There are shows almost every night of the week in San Diego so hitting the music scene is a must! Other than music, hiking trails are where it’s at. San Diego has some of the best hiking trails and you can’t go wrong with any.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
