We had the good fortune of connecting with Tim Van Damm and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tim, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is critical to any successful business. When I started this business I had very little capital, a bunch of small kids, and my family was dependent on my income. I knew I had the skillset to be successful in real estate but I didn’t have the hands on experience of selling real estate day in and day out. I took a risk and bet on myself. There was no safety net which meant sink or swim. However, I understood the fundamentals of what it takes to get a new business off the ground and I was mentally prepared for the challenges, rejection, and roadblocks. Had I not taken that risk of jumping into a new profession and going all in, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
People often ask me how I’ve been able to succeed at such a high level in such a short period of time. What they don’t see is the 20+ years of hard work, trial and error, and experience that is the foundation that my business is built on. I grew up in the Hudson Valley in New York and moved to Boston after school. I’ve worked in the staffing industry, software, custom home building, development for non-profits, and even managed a New York Times Best-Selling Author for a time.
One thing that sets me apart is my work ethic and my depth of experience. Having worked across industries I have a breath of experience that most of my competitors don’t have. My experience building custom homes has served my clients very well as many clients either want to build, renovate, or add on to the homes they purchase.
In addition to working tirelessly on behalf of my clients, I also value integrity. I am very aggressive when negotiating on behalf of my clients but I will never cross an ethical boundary or do anything to compromise my integrity. I’m proud to have built a business and reputation rooted in professionalism and integrity.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
San Diego is truly “America’s Finest City”. Having moved from the East Coast I have enjoyed discovering the city. Each area has it’s own unique culture and feel to it. As I live in the North County of San Diego, often when people come to town I show them around North County. I love the beaches at Del Mar, going over to the Torrey Pines Lodge, having breakfast at Thyme in the Ranch in Rancho Santa Fe, lunch at Rancho Valencia, or dinner at Rare Society in Solana Beach.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The person who deserves so much of the credit for my success is my wife, Cecilia. She has been by my side through thick and thin. She believed in me and encouraged me to go into real estate and manages our home which enables me to go out and do what I need to do to produce and perform at a high level. In addition to all of that, Cecilia handles all of my marketing and she does a phenomenal job. I’m grateful to have her by my side and I never could have achieved what I’ve achieved without her support.
