We had the good fortune of connecting with Synthia Link and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Synthia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I actually never intended to start a business! It all happened organically. During the pandemic I started teaching free fitness classes to friends. Those friends invited other friends and shared through social media. A few months later I realized that I needed a more formal platform to keep things going, and thus, Slink Fit was born! When we became official, my biggest goal was to create connection and community. Since we were mid pandemic, a lot of people were feeling isolated and alone… I wanted Slink Fit to be a slice of normalcy, routine, joy, and productivity for those who wanted it.
It’s been really exciting and a huge learning experience. Being a business owner is incredibly hard work, but also really rewarding.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I think what sets SLINK FIT apart from other workouts, is that we truly take the time to get to know each and every person who takes class. I try to make it a point to know everyone’s name, connect with them on social media, and answer any questions they may have. I want to make myself accessible so that anyone who takes my class feels included and seen.
I’m incredibly proud of the community we’ve created in SLINK FIT. There are people who have never been in the same room before, who live in different states, visiting each other! People have reached out to others who seemed to need a friend, and have become support systems for each other. It’s incredible to see that true and lasting relationships have been made. It’s really beautiful and really heartwarming.
I’m excited that people are seeing change. Whether it’s finally committing to a plan, losing weight, gaining strength, or just stepping outside their comfort zones, I’m so happy to see people are achieving their goals!
It’s definitely not easy to grow a business, and it hasn’t been easy to get where I am today. I think the biggest challenge for me has been balance. In addition to being a business owner, I am an actor, a wife and a mother. It’s really difficult to find time and compartmentalize. I’ve had to work really hard at time management. It’s a work in progress, but I’m finding it!
I want people to know that at its core, SLINK FIT is so much more than workouts. It’s a community. It’s a place for people to feel empowered and strong. It’s a place to challenge yourself, achieve your goals, and discover what you’re capable of.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ll be honest, my husband and I moved to LA just before the pandemic started, so I’m not all that knowledgeable about things to do here!! If I had to plan a day, it would probably consist of picking up some lunch at Erewhon, going out to Malibu beach at Point Dume. It’s really beautiful and fairly secluded so you can easily have your own spot to enjoy the waves!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I couldn’t have done any of this without my husband, and my friends Jonalyn, Kalyn and Meredith. During this entire thing I was pregnant with my daughter. These women stepped in for me when I needed the help teaching and running the back end of the business. They kept me sane and supported.
My husband has been my rock. Whenever I need encouragement to continue pressing forward he is there to remind me just how special this business and community are. I’m very lucky.
