We had the good fortune of connecting with Summer Darling and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Summer, what are you inspired by?
I am inspired by all forms of art and creativity. I believe everyone has something special to offer. It is such an inspiration to experience another’s perspective through their art. It allows me to dive deeper as an artist.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have always played with makeup from a very young age. I was never allowed to wear makeup so I remember stealing my moms. I would go in to her bathroom to apply makeup while she was at work around age 11. I’d quickly wash it away after I got a few pics and that’s how I got to practice and learn. That later turned in to me doing my friends makeup in their bathrooms as a teen and then becoming an artist at Sephora in my early 20s. Landing my dream job at Sephora had provided a new perspective for me. It allowed me to dive pretty deep and see beyond just the makeup. I was able to see just how much of an impact makeup really did have on so many people and their confidence. My goal became and still is to inspire confidence and the artist within us all. There are no rules to makeup or art. Art is a tool that allows us to express ourselves and connect us all. There is so much beyond the limits we place on ourselves daily and art has no limit. I hope for it to free many people as it has freed me. It hasn’t always been easy and I’ve stumbled a few times but I can say that the journey has always been worth it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely visit all of our beaches and then spend time in Hillcrest, North Park and Adams Ave for an authentic San Diego experience. Hillcrest farmers market is a must on Sundays as well as the abundance of brunch spots in walking distance. Adams Ave is a must visit if the street fair is in season! Some of my favorite spots to visit are North Park Beer Company, Karl Strauss Tasting Room, City Tacos, and Splash Wine Lounge & Bistro.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother. She is the strongest and most creative woman I know. I owe everything I am to her passionate and creative nature. She was always pushing boundaries and stepping outside of the box.
