We had the good fortune of connecting with Steven Duncan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Steven, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I had always wanted to work for myself and the stars aligned for me to start my own art business.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I had my first art show in 2012 after being invited by a friend that knew I painted for fun. I sold several paintings at the show, and this gave me the motivation to keep going to see where selling art might take me. I knew a lot of artists that had a hard time selling their work, but luckily it came pretty easily to me. That first show was successful enough to open up a few more doors to have another art show. I sold more paintings at this second show. I created an Instagram account shortly thereafter and began posting all my paintings as soon as I would finish them. I got a great response almost immediately as a commission artist on Instagram. I sold more and more paintings as the years passed without there ever being a break in commissions. I was still working full-time in commercial/tv/film on set in the Art Department as an Art Assistant from 2013-2017. Two years ago I found myself in the position to pursue my goals to be a full-time artist, and to devote all my time and effort to paint. My gamble has fortunately paid off, as I have a long waiting list of clients and more commissions than I can handle. I’ve sold over 500 pieces including paintings, murals and sculptures as well as digital art.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a native to Burbank CA born and raised so I would take them on a driving tour of the city first. The pandemic has caused major shifts in Los Angeles but as things open back up, a trip to the beach and Venice boardwalk are essentials and a gym excursion at Golds Gym in Glendale at the Galleria are two of my personal tour guide stops. Mediterranean food in Burbank at The Original Kebob House is also a personal favorite.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
