We had the good fortune of connecting with Garidey Bray and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Garidey, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
Hustle. I don’t stop till I get what I want. I will work really hard for something I believe in. Discipline. Taking time to understand people’s feelings and where they come from. I have always been interested in art. Always creating with my hands no matter what the canvas. I try hard to surround my myself with people that inspire me , are supportive and are good role models. I love when I’m surrounded by People that like to go to the next level!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When it comes to hair I like to create a look that is individual to the person. I help bring out their personality. That was instilled early in my training from Vidal Sassoon. I also try to teach my clients while I’m doing their hair. I want my clients to be able to do their hair in different styles for different outfits. Not just have the same look every day. Also help them achieve confidence in wearing their hair differently , to fit their mood.
I got where I am today professionally by help from other hair professionals and friends. Hustling and not saying “no” in the beginning definitely helped me with getting jobs and clients. I would have to say it was not always easy , but it sure was fun learning the industry!
Some challenges I’ve had in my career are difficult clients. Trying to make some people happy that just aren’t happy is exhausting. Later in life you realize they’re not supposed to be your clients. One thing I’ve learned is to be your true authentic self, and do your best work. People appreciate details. Give 100% . I want people to know that the hair is definitely an art. I give my whole heart in what I do; from Styles , to color , to cut and extensions. The relationships I make are THE most special aspect of the job. Many of my clients become my good friends!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I were to have a friend coming to town the first thing we would do is go to the beach. People not from California sure love to put their toes in the sand. It’s pretty special standing on the edge of the country. I would also make them see at least two sunsets. Some breakfast places I really like are Claire’s on Cedric, Naked café and Swamis. For lunches I really like Goodonya, Healthy creations and Model deli. Dinner I will go to Station sushi, Valentina’s, or go to Seaside market and pick up some of Cardiff crack and grill it. I like to take our bikes down to Oceanside and ride by the pier and on the beach. Also going down to the La Jolla caves. The shops at the forum have some good clothes and a nice outdoor vibe. The flower fields are also fun when in bloom in Carlsbad. The San Diego zoo is also an awesome place to walk around all day. It has beautiful scenery, and A wide array of animals. The botanical gardens are a nice walk, especially for those interested in what grows in California.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
All of the strong independent caring women I have in my chair. They are all educated and working for a better world.
