We had the good fortune of connecting with Smoove J and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Smoove, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Their are three things that helped me succeed and that is being a person who people like, know and trust. I remember on several occasions where I heard someone utter those words and I viewed as a sign, so I took those three traits and incorporated them into my business.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from others is my ability to promote myself and my company. I have learned through trial and error, spending countless dollars on things that didn’t work, that self promotion worked the best. The best advise I would give to any creative, artist, small business owner etc, is to brand yourself at all times. For example, if you don’t have shirts for you business, then get some printed and wear them every time time you go out, you never know when an opportunity may present itself so why not be prepared. The thing I am the most proud of is seeing my nephew join the Air Force and making a name for himself I got to where I am today with faith and hard work. It wasn’t easy at times, but I overcame those challenges by always reminding myself of why I started my business and the goals I set in the beginning. Some lessons I learned along the way is be patient, do your homework first, learn everything you can about your industry, stay up-to-date with the latest trends in your industry and if there is something you don’t know ask someone for help. Also, spend money the right way the first time. I remember in the beginning of starting my business, I had business card printed that had my personal email and phone number on them without a website. Eventually I would have enough content to put on a website, get a professional email address and business phone number, but I still would have to get them printed for a second time, so safe yourself some money and do it right the first time. When it comes to my brand and my story I will refer back to my company slogan, “The Music Speaks For Itself”.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to give a shout out to some people that are instrumental in my career : Thantamia Heffner, shoutout to you for being my number one fan and supporter, standing by my side no matter what and keeping me grounded throughout every thing. Shout out to West Coast Radio for giving me an opportunity to be apart of a great platform for underground artists in San Diego and allowing me to grow my podcast!
